## Content

**Intro:** A cost sheet shows how the cost of a product builds up from materials to the final cost of sales. This editable template follows the classical Indian format used in cost accounting, with prime cost, works cost, cost of production and cost of sales for each product.

**Sections:**

#### How to use the template

**Body:** Replace the example rows with your products or batches. Enter units produced and the cost heads in rupees, with overheads already allocated to each product. The sheet computes prime cost, cost of production, cost of sales and unit cost in every row, and the totals and summary update below. Export to Excel or PDF to attach to a quotation file, a costing review or a lender discussion. Run it once per period or per work order.

#### The cost build-up

**Body:** Prime cost is direct materials, direct labour and direct expenses. Adding factory overhead gives works cost. Adding administration overhead gives cost of production. Adding selling and distribution overhead gives cost of sales. Profit on top gives the selling price. This structure follows the cost accounting standard approach to cost sheets, with each layer reflecting a different management question, from shop floor efficiency to total commercial cost.

**Bullets:**

- Prime cost: what the product directly consumes
- Works cost: adds the plant's running costs
- Cost of sales: the full cost to deliver to the customer

#### Reading the summary

**Body:** The material share tells you how exposed you are to commodity swings. In many engineering plants it sits well above half of the cost of sales. The overhead share shows how much cost depends on volume and allocation methods. If one product shows a unit cost far above peers with similar processes, check its overhead basis and any scrap or rework not captured in materials. Compare the unit cost with the selling price to see contribution.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** Mistakes include loading all overhead on a single driver, leaving out scrap and wastage, mixing GST into material cost, and ignoring stock changes between periods. Input GST should be excluded from material cost where credit is available. In your ERP, pull direct costs from production orders and overheads from cost centres so the sheet ties back to ledgers.

**Cta:** If your cost sheets are still built from exports and manual allocations, we can help produce them directly from ERP production orders and cost centres.

**Faq:**

#### What is the difference between works cost and cost of production?

**Answer:** Works cost is prime cost plus factory overhead. Cost of production adds administration overhead to works cost, after adjusting for work in progress. The first measures the plant, the second includes the general management burden of producing the goods.

#### Should GST be included in the cost sheet?

**Answer:** No, where input tax credit is available. Material cost should be net of recoverable GST. If credit is blocked or the business cannot claim it, the non-creditable part becomes part of the cost of the item.

#### How do I allocate overhead to products?

**Answer:** Common bases are machine hours, direct labour hours or direct labour cost for factory overhead, and a percentage of works cost for administration. Pick a driver that reflects actual consumption, and apply it consistently from period to period.

#### Can I use this for quotation pricing?

**Answer:** Yes. Use the cost of sales per unit as the base, add the margin you need, and compare with market price and customer targets. Review materials separately when quoting long contracts, since price changes affect the margin quickly.
