#### What a good wage slip contains

**Body:** At a minimum a slip lists the employer, worker identity, period, days worked, each component of wages, every deduction with its reason, and net pay. For factories, wage periods, deduction rules and registers such as the overtime register follow the applicable Act and state rules. Clear slips also reduce disputes about overtime and advances.

#### Worked example

**Body:** In the sample, earnings are Basic 14,000 + DA 4,000 + HRA 3,000 + overtime 4,615 = Rs 25,615. Deductions are PF 1,680 and advance 1,000, total Rs 2,680, giving net pay Rs 22,935. If the worker also qualified for ESI, the employee share would appear in the deduction column.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** Lumping overtime into basic hides the double-rate calculation. Leaving out the UAN makes PF reconciliation difficult. Making unexplained deductions invites complaints under wage payment rules. When your ERP produces payroll, compare its printed slip with this structure to ensure the legally expected fields are visible.

#### Is a wage slip mandatory?

**Answer:** Employers are expected to give wage slips, and the labour codes and state rules reinforce this. Even where a particular statute is silent, slips are the best evidence of payment in disputes. Check the rules that apply to your establishment.

#### Which deductions are allowed?

**Answer:** Permitted deductions are listed in the wage payment law and include PF, ESI, income tax, recoverable advances and fines approved by the authority. Other deductions should have worker consent and legal basis.

#### Can the slip be electronic?

**Answer:** Electronic wage slips by email or app are generally accepted if the worker can access them, though some states or inspectors may expect hard copies for those without digital access. Keep a record of delivery.

#### Should overtime appear separately?

**Answer:** Yes. Showing overtime hours and amount separately demonstrates the statutory rate was applied and makes registers and audits easier. It also helps the worker verify the calculation.
