**Notes:** FIFO ending value equals qty times latest receipt cost only when ending quantity is no larger than the most recent receipt layer. For deeper stock, split the item into several rows, one per cost layer. Enter the average cost from your ERP item cost record for the same date.

## Content

**Intro:** Controllers are often asked what a change of costing method would do to the balance sheet and margins. This worksheet values the same ending stock three ways, FIFO, weighted average and standard, so the difference is visible item by item.

**Sections:**

#### How to use the worksheet

**Body:** Replace the example rows with your items. For each item enter the ending quantity, the cost of your latest receipt, your weighted average cost, and your standard cost from the item master. The sheet computes value under each method and the gap between FIFO and standard. Sort by the gap column in Excel to find the items driving the difference. Keep the quantity the same across all three methods, since the comparison is about cost per unit only.

**Bullets:**

- Pull average cost from the ERP cost record at the valuation date
- Split items with several cost layers into several rows
- Use the same cut-off date for all columns
- Include only inventory owned by the company (exclude consignment)

#### How the three methods differ

**Body:** FIFO assumes the oldest costs leave first, so ending inventory carries the newest costs. When prices rise, FIFO shows higher inventory and higher profit than average cost. Weighted average blends every receipt into one cost, which smooths price swings. Standard cost values everything at a fixed predetermined cost and sends the difference to variance accounts, so inventory value changes only when standards are revised. US GAAP permits FIFO, average and standard (if it approximates actual); LIFO is not allowed under IFRS.

#### How to read the result

**Body:** A large positive FIFO minus standard figure means your standards are stale and low: variances have been absorbed in the P and L while inventory sits understated. A negative gap means standards are above recent purchase cost and inventory may be overstated and heading for a write-down. As a rule of thumb, a gap that is a small single digit percent of inventory is usually tolerable, while a double digit gap deserves a standard cost update before year end.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** Do not compare methods using different quantities or dates. Do not forget lower of cost and net realizable value tests, which apply on top of any method. Changing method for tax or statutory reporting can require regulator or tax authority consent in some countries, so check before acting. Capitalized variances, landed cost and freight must be included consistently in all three columns or the comparison is misleading.

**Cta:** If you want the valuation by method pulled automatically from SAP, SyteLine, Epicor or NetSuite cost tables, we can show you a read-only approach. Ask for an expert review.

**Faq:**

#### Is FIFO or weighted average better for manufacturers?

**Answer:** Neither is universally better. Many discrete manufacturers use standard cost for control and report approximate actual cost after variances. FIFO or average suit distribution-heavy or commodity-driven stock. Your auditors and tax rules usually matter more than preference.

#### Does standard cost comply with accounting standards?

**Answer:** Both US GAAP and IFRS allow standard cost as a measurement technique if results approximate actual cost, which means standards must be reviewed regularly and material variances reflected in inventory valuation.

#### How often should standard costs be updated?

**Answer:** Most plants roll standards annually, some semi-annually, and volatile commodity businesses more often. A persistent purchase price variance on key items is the signal that standards are due.

#### Can I use this to support a method change request?

**Answer:** It gives a first impact estimate. A formal change needs full layer data, an audit trail and the right disclosures, and in some jurisdictions prior approval. Treat this sheet as a screening step, not the final calculation.
