**Notes:** This is a shop floor sign-off, not an AS9102 first article report. For aerospace first article requirements use a dedicated FAI form and your customer instructions.

## Content

**Intro:** A first piece check before the run is the cheapest scrap prevention a job shop has. This one-page sign-off gives the operator and inspector a place to record measured values, gauges and approval, then clip it to the traveler.

**Sections:**

#### How to use the sign-off

**Body:** Fill in the job, part, operation and machine, then print or export the sheet. After the first piece is cut, measure each key feature against the drawing and write the requirement and actual value in the table. Record which gauge was used so a calibration question can be traced later. Pick a result, add comments about any offset change, and collect signatures before the lot is released to run.

#### What to measure

**Body:** Do not measure everything. Pick features that carry the tightest tolerances, features that are hard to rework, and anything the customer flagged. On a turned part that usually means bore and outside diameters, length and thread. For milled parts add hole position and flatness.

**Bullets:**

- Critical dimensions first, then fits and threads
- Use gauges within calibration, record the ID
- Measure after the machine has warmed up
- Re-check after any offset change or tool swap

#### How it differs from AS9102 FAI

**Body:** A first piece sign-off approves a setup and happens on every job or operation as needed. An AS9102 first article inspection is a formal, fully ballooned report on the part against every drawing characteristic, required by certain aerospace customers when a part is new or changes. Use this sheet for shop control and a formal FAI form where the customer requires one.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** Checking only one dimension and calling it good, measuring with a gauge that is past its calibration date, and starting the run before the inspector signs are the usual failures. Make the sign-off a gate: no signature, no run.

**Cta:** If you want first piece results and gauge IDs captured against the job in your ERP, Netray can help design that workflow.

**Faq:**

#### Is this the same as an AS9102 report?

**Answer:** No. AS9102 defines a formal first article inspection report with specific forms and full characteristic accountability. This sheet is a shop floor setup approval. Use the formal report when your customer or contract requires it.

#### Who should sign it?

**Answer:** At minimum the operator and a second person, often an inspector or supervisor. Set the rule in your own procedure and apply it consistently.

#### How many pieces should be checked?

**Answer:** At least the first piece after setup and after significant changes. Many shops also check again after a tool change or at set intervals. Your control plan or customer requirement sets the actual frequency.

#### Can I add more features to the table?

**Answer:** Export to Word and add rows, or print and write in extra features by hand. The table is a starting layout.
