## Content

**Intro:** Supervisors talk about labor efficiency, cost accountants talk about variances, and HR talks about utilization. They are three views of the same hours. This calculator takes units, standards and hours and produces all of them, so the plant and finance can reconcile one set of numbers.

**Sections:**

#### How to use the calculator

**Body:** Enter good units produced for the period, the standard hours per unit from the routing, hours booked to jobs, and total direct labor hours paid. Add standard and actual labor rates. Earned hours are units times standard hours. Efficiency is earned divided by booked. Utilization is booked divided by paid, which shows how much paid time was spent on jobs rather than waiting, cleaning or in meetings. Use one week or one month and one department at a time.

**Bullets:**

- Count good units only, not scrap.
- Use the same period for hours and units.
- Run the calculator by line before plant-wide.

#### The formulas

**Body:** Labor efficiency equals earned hours over actual hours times 100. The labor efficiency variance equals standard hours allowed minus actual hours, multiplied by the standard rate. The labor rate variance equals the standard rate minus the actual rate, multiplied by actual hours. The two add up to the total labor variance against standard cost. Overall effectiveness on paid hours multiplies the effects of utilization and efficiency, so it shows the whole gap between paid time and earned output.

#### Reading the result

**Body:** A low efficiency with high utilization points to slow work, poor standards, rework or missing material. Low utilization with good efficiency points to idle time, setup, absence cover or poor scheduling. An unfavorable rate variance with good efficiency often comes from overtime or a richer mix of skilled staff. The sign matters: check how your finance team reports it. Never judge a single shift from one week of data.

#### Common mistakes and ERP notes

**Body:** Typical mistakes are stale standards, counting units before inspection, and mixing indirect hours with direct hours. Variances come from the cost system: SAP CO production variances, Infor SyteLine job cost variance reports, and Epicor job labor against standard. Be aware that variances can be booked at order close, so period views differ from shop floor views. Reconcile the two before you set targets.

**Cta:** Netray can help you build a read-only labor performance view from your ERP, with efficiency and utilization by work center and shift.

**Faq:**

#### What is the formula for labor efficiency variance?

**Answer:** Standard hours allowed for the units produced minus actual hours worked, times the standard labor rate. A negative figure means more hours were used than the standard allows, which is unfavorable.

#### What is the difference between efficiency and utilization?

**Answer:** Efficiency compares earned hours to booked hours, so it measures how fast people work against the standard. Utilization compares booked hours to paid hours, so it measures how much paid time was spent on jobs.

#### What is a good labor efficiency?

**Answer:** It depends on how standards were set. Many plants aim for 85 to 100 percent on direct labor. Values far above 100 percent suggest loose standards, and very low values suggest problems with material, methods or standards.

#### What are earned hours?

**Answer:** Earned hours are the standard hours credited for good output: units produced multiplied by the standard hours per unit. They are what the production would have taken if everyone had worked exactly at standard.
