**Disclaimer:** Rough planning figures. Container internal sizes and payloads vary by carrier. Check door dimensions (about 2.34 m wide and 2.28 m high on a standard box), floor plan and lashing with your forwarder. Out-of-gauge machines need open top or flat rack.

## Content

**Intro:** Before a forwarder quotes you need cubic meters, weight and a container count. This calculator converts crate dimensions into volume, air volumetric weight, sea revenue tons and the number of containers.

**Sections:**

#### How to use it

**Body:** Enter the outside dimensions of one packed crate in centimeters and its gross weight with packing, then the number of identical crates. Select a container type and a realistic loading efficiency, and add your rates if you have them. The tool gives total cubic meters, air chargeable weight, sea revenue tons, the number of containers needed by volume and by weight, and a rough cost for air and LCL sea freight. Use the largest outside dimensions including skids and any protruding items, because the carrier measures the packed piece.

#### The formulas

**Body:** Volume per crate equals length times width times height divided by one million for centimeters to cubic meters. Air freight charges the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight, using the common divisor 6000 cubic centimeters per kilogram, which equals 167 kg per cubic meter. Sea LCL charges per revenue ton, the greater of one cubic meter or one tonne. Containers by volume equal total volume divided by usable volume, rounded up, where usable volume is nominal volume times efficiency. The final count is the larger of volume-driven and weight-driven counts.

**Bullets:**

- Heavy dense machines are often limited by weight, not volume.
- Tall crates may not fit through the door of a standard container.
- Some airlines use different volumetric divisors.

#### Reading the results

**Body:** With six crates of 220 by 120 by 160 centimeters and 1450 kg each, the volume is about 25 cbm and gross weight 8.7 tonnes. At 70 percent efficiency, a 40 foot box gives about 47 usable cbm, so one container is enough by volume and weight. Air freight would be charged on the larger of 8700 kg actual and about 6,800 kg volumetric. Comparing both modes immediately shows why air is rarely used for heavy machines, except for urgent spares. The bar chart shows how many containers you need as the crate count grows.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** Planners often use net machine weight instead of the packed gross weight, ignore skids and fumigation requirements, or assume crates can be stacked when they cannot. Others forget that a machine may be out of gauge and needs a flat rack. A packing list with exact dimensions and weights per crate, tied to the sales order and shipment in your ERP, prevents most surprises at the port. Always confirm with your forwarder before committing to a ship date.

**Cta:** If packing lists and shipments are in an ERP, we can build an agent that drafts a container plan from the delivery for your logistics team to confirm.

**Faq:**

#### What volumetric divisor is used for air freight?

**Answer:** Most carriers use 6000 cubic centimeters per kilogram, which is 167 kg per cubic meter, for international air cargo. Some express services use 5000. Confirm with the carrier, because the divisor changes the chargeable weight.

#### How many cubic meters fit in a 40 foot container?

**Answer:** A standard 40 foot container has about 67 cubic meters of internal volume and a high cube about 76. Practical usable volume for crates is lower because of shapes, bracing and gaps, often 60 to 80 percent.

#### What does weight or measurement mean in sea freight?

**Answer:** For LCL cargo the carrier charges per revenue ton, which is the greater of one cubic meter or 1000 kg. A dense machine is charged on weight, while a bulky light crate is charged on volume.

#### Can I load a machine that is taller than the door?

**Answer:** Not in a standard container. You need an open top, a flat rack or a platform, and the cargo may be out of gauge. Ask your forwarder early because these units are scarcer and cost more.
