#### Key assumptions

**Key:** assumptions

**Type:** textarea

**Default:** Volume +6 percent on prior year driven by two new customer programs. Steel price assumed flat after Q1. Wage increase 4 percent from April. One new CNC cell commissioned in Q3.

**Blocks:**

Fiscal year: {{fy}}

#### 1. Volume and revenue drivers

**Table:**

**Columns:**

- Driver
- Budget

**Rows:**

**0:** Units

**1:** {{volume}}

**0:** Average price per unit

**0:** Direct headcount

**1:** {{headcount}}

#### 2. Cost structure assumptions

**Table:**

**Columns:**

- Basis

**Rows:**

**0:** Direct material

**1:** {{material_pct}} percent of sales

**0:** Direct labor

**1:** {{labor_pct}} percent of sales

**0:** Fixed manufacturing overhead

**1:** {{oh_amount}} per year

**0:** Selling and administrative

**1:** {{sga}} per year

#### 3. Monthly phasing (complete)

**Table:**

**Columns:**

- Month
- Units
- Revenue
- Material
- Labor
- Overhead
- Operating margin

**Rows:**

**0:** Q1

**0:** Q2

**0:** Q3

**0:** Q4

**0:** Total

**1:** {{volume}}

**5:** {{oh_amount}}

#### 4. Capital expenditure

**Body:** Planned capital expenditure: {{capex}}
Each item above the approval threshold requires a separate capex request with NPV and payback.

#### 5. Key assumptions and risks

**Body:** {{assumptions}}

#### Approvals

**Signatures:**

- Plant manager
- Plant controller
- Divisional CFO

**Notes:** This is a starting structure. Compute annual revenue as units x price, material and labor from the percentages, and operating margin as revenue less material, labor, overhead and S and A. Adapt line items to your chart of accounts and policy.

## Content

**Intro:** A manufacturing budget is only useful when its assumptions are written down and approved. This template gives you a clean document with the volume drivers, cost structure, phasing and capex sections that finance and plant leadership expect.

**Sections:**

#### How to use the template

**Body:** Fill in the fields on the left: plant, year, volume, price, material and labor percentages, fixed overhead, selling and administrative cost, headcount and capex. Write the key assumptions in plain language, because the numbers will be questioned later and the assumptions explain why they were chosen. Export to Word or PDF to circulate for approval, or to Excel to build the monthly detail on top.

**Bullets:**

- Start from sales forecast, then derive production volume
- Adjust volume for planned inventory build or reduction
- Document every price and wage assumption
- Keep one version for approval and one for monitoring

#### Building the numbers behind it

**Body:** Revenue is units times average price. Direct material and labor are variable and follow volume, typically modeled from bills of material and routing standards rather than a flat percentage once you are past the first draft. Fixed overhead covers plant management, depreciation, rent, utilities base load and maintenance. Operating margin is revenue less all of these. Test the break-even volume, which is fixed cost divided by contribution margin per unit, so the board sees how much volume loss the plant can absorb.

#### Review and approval

**Body:** Compare the draft against last year actual, current run rate and capacity. A budget that requires output above demonstrated capacity, or margins above any historical quarter, will fail in the first quarter. Circulate to the plant manager, procurement and HR for sign-off on volume, material prices and headcount before it goes to the CFO. Lock the approved version and track monthly variances against it.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** Budgeting from the prior year without removing one-off items, ignoring inflation on contracts that reprice annually, forgetting the cost of new equipment ramp-up, and setting overhead as a percentage of sales even though it is largely fixed. Another is not tying the budget to standards in the ERP, so variance reports cannot be explained against it.

**Cta:** If budget versus actual reporting is a monthly scramble, we can connect it to your ERP so plant leaders see variances without a spreadsheet. Ask for an expert review.

**Faq:**

#### What should a manufacturing budget include?

**Answer:** A sales budget, production budget, direct material, direct labor and overhead budgets, selling and administrative budget, capex plan, cash flow and headcount plan. This template covers the core drivers and sections you can expand.

#### What is a flexible budget?

**Answer:** A flexible budget restates variable costs at the actual volume produced so you can compare like with like. It separates volume effect from spending effect and is much more useful for plant review than a static budget alone.

#### How often should the budget be reforecast?

**Answer:** Quarterly is common, with a rolling twelve month view. Reforecast sooner after a major customer change, large price move or capacity change.

#### Can I use this for a service or job shop?

**Answer:** Yes. Treat units as billable hours or jobs, adapt the cost lines to your structure, and keep the assumptions section. The document structure applies broadly.
