**Help:** Rent, salaried staff, depreciation and other costs that do not vary with volume.

#### Expected volume

**Key:** volume

**Type:** slider

**Default:** 18000

**Min:** 0

**Max:** 40000

**Step:** 500

**Unit:** units

#### Target profit

**Key:** target

**Expr:** if(gt(price, 0), (price - var_cost) / price * 100, 0)

**Format:** percent

#### Break-even volume

**Key:** be_units

**Format:** percent

**Description:** How far volume can fall before losses begin.

#### Profit at expected volume

**Key:** profit

**Expr:** volume * (price - var_cost) - fixed

**Format:** currency

**Primary:** true

#### Volume for target profit

**Key:** target_units

**Expr:** (fixed + target) / (price - var_cost)

**Format:** integer

**Chart:**

#### Profit vs volume

**Type:** line

**X:** volume

**From:** 0

**To:** 40000

**Steps:** 40

**Series:**

- profit

**Disclaimer:** Assumes constant price and variable cost per unit and fixed costs that do not step within the range. Real plants have step-fixed costs and mix effects.

## Content

**Intro:** Break-even analysis tells you the volume at which revenue exactly covers fixed and variable costs. For a plant manager it answers quick questions such as how much volume can we lose, or how many units justify a new shift.

**Sections:**

#### How to use the calculator

**Body:** Enter price, variable cost per unit and fixed cost for the period you are analysing, such as a month or a year. Use the slider for expected volume. The outputs give the break-even point, margin of safety and the volume required for a target profit. The chart plots profit across the volume range and crosses zero at the break-even point.

**Bullets:**

- Keep the fixed cost and the volume on the same time basis
- Use standard or actual variable cost, but say which
- Run it per product line when mix differs a lot

#### The formulas

**Body:** Contribution margin = price - variable cost. Break-even units = fixed costs / contribution margin. Break-even revenue = break-even units x price. Margin of safety = (expected volume - break-even volume) / expected volume. Volume for target profit = (fixed costs + target profit) / contribution margin. With a price of 85, variable cost of 52 and fixed cost of 420,000, break-even is about 12,727 units.

#### Reading the result

**Body:** A low margin of safety means a small drop in demand turns the period unprofitable, so cost flexibility matters more than price. A high fixed cost base raises operating leverage, so profit moves faster than volume in both directions. Test the effect of a price rise or a variable cost reduction by changing one input and watching the break-even move.

#### Common mistakes and ERP notes

**Body:** People often put absorbed overhead in variable cost, or treat direct labor as fixed or variable inconsistently. Standard costs in the ERP usually blend fixed and variable overhead, so split them using the cost element or rate type. Do not use break-even to price a single quote without checking capacity limits.

**Bullets:**

- Separate fixed and variable overhead rates
- Use a weighted contribution margin for a mix of products
- Review step costs such as a second shift

**Cta:** If cost elements in your ERP blend fixed and variable overhead, we can show how a read-only query could split them by product family for this analysis.

**Faq:**

#### What is included in variable cost?

**Answer:** Costs that rise and fall with output: direct material, piece-rate labor, packaging, freight out, sales commissions and variable utilities. Salaried supervision, rent and depreciation are fixed. Mixed costs should be split into variable and fixed parts.

#### How do I handle several products?

**Answer:** Compute a weighted average contribution margin using the expected sales mix, then divide fixed costs by it. Changing the mix changes the break-even, so test the mix you expect, not the one you hope for.

#### What is a healthy margin of safety?

**Answer:** There is no universal figure. Plants with high fixed costs and volatile demand want a higher cushion, often 20 percent or more, while stable contract businesses can run lower. Use history of demand swings to set your own threshold.

#### Does break-even include taxes and interest?

**Answer:** Only if you include them in the fixed costs. The standard form is an operating break-even before tax. For a full cash break-even, add debt service and exclude non-cash items such as depreciation.
