**Summary:**

#### Plant load vs capacity

**Key:** plant_util

**Expr:** if(gt(sum_avail,0), sum_load / sum_avail * 100, 0)

**Format:** percent

**Description:** Total load divided by total available capacity. Check individual work centers too, the bottleneck matters more than the average.

**Primary:** true

**Notes:** Anything above 100 percent in the Load vs capacity column is overloaded: add shifts, outsource, move work to another center or move the due date. Above roughly 85 to 90 percent, queues grow quickly even though the center is not formally overloaded.

## Content

**Intro:** This capacity planning template compares the hours your work centers can deliver with the hours your orders require. Enter machines, shifts and realistic efficiency, add load from your orders, and see which work center is overloaded.

**Sections:**

#### How to use the capacity planning template

**Body:** Choose the planning period, for example a month with 20 working days, and list your work centers. Enter machine count, hours per shift, shifts per day and working days, then an efficiency figure that reflects real productive time. Available capacity is calculated for you. Enter load as the setup plus run hours from open and forecast orders on that work center, taken from your routings. The sheet shows load as a percentage of capacity and the spare or short hours. Edit rows, add work centers, and export to Excel or PDF for the planning meeting.

**Bullets:**

- Use realistic efficiency, not 100 percent.
- Load = setup hours + run time per piece x quantity, from routings.
- Plan the bottleneck work center first.
- Re-run weekly as orders change.

#### The formula behind the sheet

**Body:** Available capacity = machines x hours per shift x shifts x days x efficiency. Load = sum of required hours of all orders in the period. Load versus capacity = load divided by capacity. Rated capacity in many ERP systems uses the same logic: calendar hours times efficiency times utilization. If your efficiency figure is a single number, it should combine planned downtime, changeovers and typical performance loss. Compare it with OEE from the shop floor when you have it.

#### Reading the result and common mistakes

**Body:** A plant average of 75 percent can hide a grinder at 150 percent. Always read by work center. Common errors are using nameplate hours with no efficiency, ignoring setup time, loading from sales forecasts without routings, and forgetting maintenance shutdowns. When a center is overloaded, look at overtime, extra shifts, alternate routings, subcontracting and lot-size changes before moving customer dates. Keep the plan updated so it matches the ERP's finite or infinite load views.

**Cta:** If load and routing data live in your ERP, Netray can add a private AI layer on your own servers that answers 'which work center is overloaded next month' from live data, without sending it outside.

**Faq:**

#### How do you calculate manufacturing capacity?

**Answer:** Multiply machines by hours per shift, shifts per day and working days to get scheduled hours, then apply an efficiency or utilization factor for downtime and changeovers. Compare that to the hours required by the orders.

#### What efficiency should I use?

**Answer:** Use history where you have it, such as OEE or reported versus standard hours. Many discrete job shops plan between 70 and 85 percent. Start conservative and adjust after a few periods of actuals.

#### Is this the same as finite scheduling?

**Answer:** No. This is rough-cut capacity planning by period. Finite scheduling sequences individual jobs by day against capacity. Use this first to see whether the plan is feasible at all.

#### Can I export it to Excel?

**Answer:** Yes. The sheet exports to Excel, CSV or PDF, and the formulas are computed in the export so you can keep working in your own spreadsheet.
