## Content

**Intro:** Total manufacturing cost is direct materials plus direct labor plus manufacturing overhead. This calculator applies that formula per unit, adds the two parts estimators forget, scrap loss on material and setup time spread over the batch, and shows the price you need at a target margin.

**Sections:**

#### The manufacturing cost formula

**Body:** Total manufacturing cost = direct materials + direct labor + manufacturing overhead. Prime cost is the first two. Conversion cost is direct labor plus overhead. For one unit: material is the quantity times price, adjusted for scrap by dividing by yield (material divided by one minus the scrap rate); labor is hours times the loaded wage rate; overhead is the overhead rate times the driver, here direct labor hours. Selling, general and administrative costs are not manufacturing cost.

**Bullets:**

- Direct materials: parts and raw material that become the product
- Direct labor: wages of people who work on the product, plus burden
- Overhead: indirect labor, utilities, depreciation, maintenance, supplies, factory rent
- Do not include sales commissions or office salaries

#### How to use the calculator and read the chart

**Body:** Enter costs per good unit, then set the batch size and your overhead rate. The result shows the unit cost, the batch cost, and the price at your target margin. The chart sweeps batch size from 1 to 500 and shows how setup time is spread: at small batches the setup labor and its overhead dominate, and the curve flattens as the batch grows. If your real jobs sit on the steep part of the curve, batching, quick changeover, or minimum order quantities have the biggest effect.

#### Worked example

**Body:** With the defaults, material per good unit is 14.50 divided by 0.96, about 15.10. Loaded labor rate is 24 times 1.28, about 30.72, so 0.35 hours is about 10.75. Setup of 2.5 hours over 100 units adds about 0.77. Overhead applies to 0.375 hours per unit at 38, about 14.25. The total is roughly 40.87 per unit and about 4,087 for the batch. At 30 percent margin the price is about 58.39. Change one input at a time to see what drives cost.

#### Common mistakes and ERP notes

**Body:** Frequent errors are leaving scrap out of material cost, using the wage without burden, applying overhead to the wrong driver, and spreading setup across too many units. For total cost of a period rather than a unit, use the cost of goods manufactured schedule, which adds the change in work in process. In ERP systems, the same model lives in the item cost roll-up, the routing with setup and run times, and the overhead rates on work centers, so check that those master data values match what you enter here.

**Cta:** If your bills of material, routings, and overhead rates live in an ERP, we can help you compare this estimate to actual job costs privately on your own servers. Ask for an expert review.

**Faq:**

#### What is the formula for total manufacturing cost?

**Answer:** Total manufacturing cost equals direct materials plus direct labor plus manufacturing overhead. Divide by the number of good units to get cost per unit. To get the cost of goods manufactured for a period, also add beginning work in process and subtract ending work in process.

#### How do I calculate the overhead rate?

**Answer:** Estimate total manufacturing overhead for the period and divide by the expected total of the allocation base, such as direct labor hours or machine hours. The result is a predetermined rate that you apply to each job or unit. Revisit it when volumes or costs change.

#### Should scrap be included in manufacturing cost?

**Answer:** Normal, expected scrap should be included in the cost of good units, as this calculator does by dividing material by yield. Abnormal scrap, such as a major process failure, is usually reported separately as a loss so that it does not distort standard costs.

#### Is this the same as COGM?

**Answer:** It uses the same cost elements but works per unit and for an estimate. Cost of goods manufactured is a period schedule from your ledger balances, including work in process. Use the COGM calculator for period reporting and this one for quoting and what-if analysis.
