## Content

**Intro:** When a recipe uses more than one input, a simple usage variance hides two different problems: using the wrong proportions and getting less output from the input. This calculator separates them so production and purchasing know where to look.

**Sections:**

#### How to use it

**Body:** Enter the standard recipe quantities and standard prices for materials A and B, the standard yield, and what was actually consumed and produced in the period. The tool computes the cost per kilogram at standard mix, the input that should have been used for the actual good output, and the resulting mix, yield and total usage variances at standard prices. Use consistent units across materials.

#### The method behind it

**Body:** Mix variance compares actual quantities to total actual input redistributed at the standard proportions, valued at standard prices. Yield variance compares total actual input to the standard input allowed, valued at the standard average cost.

**Bullets:**

- Mix = sum over materials of (actual qty - total actual input x standard share) x standard price.
- Yield = (total actual input - standard input allowed) x standard average cost per unit of input.
- Standard input allowed = actual good output / standard yield.
- Mix + yield = actual input at standard prices - standard cost allowed.

#### Reading results and common mistakes

**Body:** A favorable mix with an unfavorable yield often signals substitution of a cheaper input that hurts conversion, so check whether quality or scrap rose. An unfavorable mix with a favorable yield may be deliberate, for example adding more of a costly active ingredient. Do not mix price effects into this view and do not apply it to products where inputs cannot be substituted, since mix then has no meaning and only the yield variance matters.

**Cta:** We can wire this variance split to your batch or production order consumption records so it appears with each period close.

**Faq:**

#### When is a mix variance meaningful?

**Answer:** Only when inputs can be substituted within limits, as in alloys, blends, plastics compounds, chemicals and food recipes. For fixed bill of material assemblies, material usage is analyzed as quantity variance per component.

#### Why value everything at standard prices?

**Answer:** To isolate quantity effects from purchase price effects. Price variance is computed separately when material is received or invoiced, which keeps responsibility clear between production and purchasing.

#### Can yield variance be negative?

**Answer:** Yes. A negative result is favorable: you used less input than the standard allowed for the output achieved, perhaps due to a process improvement or an overstated standard yield.

#### What if I have three or more materials?

**Answer:** The same formulas extend by adding one term per material to the mix variance. This page keeps to two materials so the arithmetic stays visible and checkable.
