## Tool

**Kind:** calculator

**Inputs:**

#### Initial delay

**Key:** delay

**Type:** number

**Default:** 5

**Min:** 0

**Step:** 1

**Unit:** seconds

#### Backoff multiplier

**Key:** factor

**Type:** number

**Default:** 2

**Min:** 1

**Step:** 0.1

**Help:** 2 doubles the wait each time. 1 means a fixed interval.

#### Number of retries

**Key:** retries

**Type:** slider

**Default:** 8

**Min:** 1

**Max:** 15

**Step:** 1

**Unit:** retries

#### Time per attempt

**Key:** timeout

**Type:** number

**Default:** 10

**Min:** 0

**Step:** 1

**Unit:** seconds

**Help:** Request timeout you wait before treating an attempt as failed.

#### Message must be delivered within

**Key:** sla

**Type:** number

**Default:** 30

**Min:** 1

**Step:** 1

**Unit:** minutes

**Outputs:**

#### Total wait between attempts

**Key:** wait_total

**Expr:** if(eq(factor, 1), delay * retries, delay * (pow(factor, retries) - 1) / (factor - 1))

**Format:** number

**Description:** Seconds spent waiting, geometric series.

#### Time spent inside attempts

**Key:** attempt_time

**Expr:** timeout * (retries + 1)

**Format:** number

#### Total retry window

**Key:** window_min

**Expr:** (wait_total + attempt_time) / 60

**Format:** minutes

**Primary:** true

#### Last delay

**Key:** last_delay

**Expr:** delay * pow(factor, retries - 1)

**Format:** number

#### Total attempts

**Key:** attempts

**Expr:** retries + 1

**Format:** integer

#### Fits inside SLA (1 yes, 0 no)

**Key:** fits

**Expr:** if(lte(window_min, sla), 1, 0)

**Format:** integer

**Primary:** true

**Chart:**

#### Retry window (minutes) vs number of retries

**Type:** line

**X:** retries

**From:** 1

**To:** 15

**Steps:** 15

**Series:**

- window_min

## Content

**Intro:** Every chat integration needs a retry policy for messages that fail with throttling or temporary errors. This calculator turns the initial delay, multiplier and retry count into the real time window, so you can check it against how fresh the message needs to be.

**Sections:**

#### How to use it

**Body:** Set the initial delay and multiplier from your queue or SDK settings, the number of retries before the message goes to a dead letter queue, and the time each attempt can take. Then enter how long the message is still useful. A machine down alert is worthless after ten minutes. A shipment confirmation is still good after hours. The fits flag shows whether the whole schedule ends inside that limit.

**Bullets:**

- Match the window to message urgency, not a default
- Add jitter in code so many clients do not retry together
- Park failures in a dead letter queue with an alert

#### The math

**Body:** For multiplier r not equal to 1, total waiting is initial delay times r to the power n minus 1, divided by r minus 1, where n is the number of retries. For r equal to 1 it is delay times n. Add the time spent inside the n plus one attempts for the full window. With a 5 second delay, doubling, 8 retries and 10 second attempts, waiting is 1,275 seconds and the window is about 23 minutes.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** Retrying non transient errors wastes time: a rejected template or an invalid phone number will fail every time, so route those to review immediately. Do not retry a send that may have succeeded unless the API supports an idempotency key, or users get duplicates. Cap the delay in code, since pure doubling grows quickly past a useful limit.

**Bullets:**

- Retry only 429, 5xx and timeouts
- Use idempotency keys or message IDs to prevent duplicates
- Respect Retry-After if the API sends it

**Cta:** If you need a resilient message layer between your ERP and chat tools, with queues, retries and a dead letter review screen, Netray can build and operate it with you.

**Faq:**

#### What multiplier should I use?

**Answer:** Two is the common default. It spreads retries out quickly. A smaller factor such as 1.5 gives a finer schedule if you need more attempts inside a short window.

#### Why does the window include attempt time?

**Answer:** Each attempt may wait for a timeout before failing, and that time counts against how fresh the message is. Ignoring it understates the true delay.

#### How many retries are enough?

**Answer:** Enough to ride out a normal outage for that message type, no more. Use the sweep chart to find the count that fits your SLA, then alert on anything that reaches the dead letter queue.

#### Does jitter change the result?

**Answer:** Jitter randomizes each delay by a fraction, so the total varies slightly around the figure shown. It prevents synchronized retry storms and is worth adding.
