## Content

**Intro:** When the peso strengthens, a Mexican plant costs more in dollars even if nothing changes on the shop floor. This calculator shows how much, and how much a partial hedge would have saved or cost.

**Sections:**

#### How to use it

**Body:** Split your monthly plant spend into pesos and dollars. Set the exchange rate you budgeted and then move the scenario rate to test a stronger or weaker peso. Use the hedge slider for the share of peso costs covered by forwards or options at the budget rate. The result is the monthly dollar cost, the variance against budget and an annual figure you can take to the CFO.

**Bullets:**

- Include peso payroll, social charges, rent, energy and local suppliers.
- Keep dollar-priced imports in the dollar field.
- Run at least three rates: budget, plus and minus ten percent.

#### The math

**Body:** Dollar cost of peso spend equals peso amount divided by the exchange rate, so a lower MXN per USD figure means a stronger peso and a higher dollar bill. The hedged portion is converted at the budget rate and the rest at the scenario rate. Total cost adds dollar-denominated spend, which is not affected. The variance is the hedged total minus the budgeted total.

#### Worked example

**Body:** With 14 million pesos and 650,000 dollars of monthly spend and a budget of 18.5, the budget is about 1,406,757 dollars. If the peso moves to 17, an unhedged plant pays about 1,473,529 dollars, which is 66,772 more a month. A fifty percent hedge halves most of that exposure, leaving a variance of about 33,000 dollars, or roughly 400,000 dollars a year.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** Common errors are treating all cost as peso cost, ignoring wage increases that follow a strong peso, assuming hedges are free and forgetting that your customers may reprice. Where the contract with your customer is in dollars and your cost base is in pesos, your margin is long the peso risk and short the strength. Review the contract currency before the hedge.

**Cta:** Netray can build a live view of cost by currency from your ERP ledger so exposure is tracked, not guessed.

**Faq:**

#### Which direction hurts a Mexican plant?

**Answer:** A stronger peso, meaning fewer pesos per dollar, raises the dollar cost of peso payroll and local spend. A weaker peso lowers it. The exposure is largest when most of your revenue is in dollars and most costs are in pesos.

#### Does a hedge always help?

**Answer:** No. A forward fixes the rate, so if the peso weakens you give up the benefit. Hedging reduces variance, not average cost, and has a carry cost that is not modelled here.

#### What budget rate should I use?

**Answer:** Use the rate in your approved budget or the forward rate for the period. Using spot only hides the budget miss that finance will later report.

#### Should I include inflation?

**Answer:** This tool is a snapshot. For multi-year plans add expected wage inflation in pesos separately, because it is a second force on dollar cost beside the exchange rate.
