**Notes:** Floor life values come from the label on the moisture barrier bag and the J-STD-033 table for the part's MSL, not from this sheet. A remaining value of 0 means the reel needs bake or disposition per your procedure. Log time out of dry storage, including time in feeders.

## Content

**Intro:** Moisture sensitive devices that sit open too long can crack or delaminate during reflow, a failure that may only show up in the field. This log keeps exposure time per reel in one place, so a line lead can see at a glance what is about to expire.

**Sections:**

#### How to use the log

**Body:** Add one row per reel or tray when the bag is opened. Enter the MSL and allowed floor life from the bag label, then update exposure hours as the reel moves between line, feeder and dry cabinet. The remaining floor life column updates automatically and never goes below zero. Export to Excel for the shift handover or print the PDF and clip it to the dry cabinet. Rows at zero remaining must go to bake or be quarantined.

#### The standard behind it

**Body:** IPC/JEDEC J-STD-020 classifies components into moisture sensitivity levels, and J-STD-033 describes how to handle, pack, ship and use them. MSL 1 has unlimited floor life at 30 C and 85 percent RH, while MSL 3 gives 168 hours and MSL 4 gives 72 hours. Many shops also use dry cabinets that pause the clock, but only if the cabinet meets the standard's humidity condition and the log shows the time in and out.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** Exposure time is often forgotten when a partially used reel goes back to a cabinet. Another common error is trusting the label of the previous bag after a bake, since a baked reel restarts the clock under defined conditions only. Do not mix MSL levels on one row and do not record floor life in days when the label gives hours. If ERP lot control does not hold the open date, this sheet becomes the only record, so file it with the work order.

**Cta:** If you want floor life clocks driven by feeder scans and ERP lot data rather than manual logs, Netray can help scope that integration.

**Faq:**

#### What does MSL mean on a component label?

**Answer:** MSL is the moisture sensitivity level from J-STD-020. A higher level means a shorter allowed time out of the sealed bag before reflow. MSL 1 is unlimited, MSL 3 is 168 hours, and MSL 6 must be baked before every use.

#### Does a dry cabinet pause the clock?

**Answer:** Only if the cabinet maintains the humidity required by J-STD-033 and your procedure allows it. Even then, many shops log time in and out so the usable floor life can be proven.

#### What happens when floor life is used up?

**Answer:** The parts must be baked per J-STD-033 and the baking conditions recorded, or scrapped or quarantined under your nonconformance process. Do not run them through reflow without disposition.

#### Can I track this in my ERP?

**Answer:** Most ERPs do not track open time per reel natively. Some MES systems do with feeder scans. Until then a controlled log like this one is a practical record.
