**Notes:** Resin cost per 1,000 = part weight / 453.592 x price per lb / (1 - scrap) x 1,000. Machine cost per 1,000 = press rate / good parts per hour x 1,000. Runner weight is not included, so add it to part weight for cold runner tools. Add secondary operations, inspection and freight as extra packaging cost if they are not in the press rate.

## Content

**Intro:** Quoting a molded part is a short chain: resin, press time, packaging, tool payback, then margin. Doing it for a dozen parts in a spreadsheet with mixed units is where errors creep in. This worksheet keeps the chain consistent and shows the annual revenue and gross profit for the whole quote package.

**Sections:**

#### How to use it

**Body:** Add a row per part and fill in the white columns: annual volume, part weight (include runner share for cold runner tools), cavities, cycle time, efficiency, scrap, resin price, burdened press rate, packaging per thousand, mold cost, amortization years and target margin. The grey columns calculate resin, machine and tool cost per thousand parts, total cost, quoted price per thousand, annual revenue and gross profit. Export to Excel to send or to adjust.

#### The cost chain

**Body:** Resin is part weight in pounds times price, grossed up for scrap. Machine cost divides the burdened press rate by good parts per hour, where good parts per hour is cavities times 3600 over cycle time, times efficiency. Tool amortization spreads mold cost over annual volume and the years you will recover it. Add packaging, then divide by one minus target margin to get price. Margin on price, not markup on cost, is the convention used here.

**Bullets:**

- Price = cost / (1 - margin %)
- A 25 percent margin on price equals a 33 percent markup on cost
- Amortization years should match the customer's committed program life

#### Reading the output

**Body:** High-volume closures live on machine time and tooling; the resin line is small. Engineering resins like nylon and PBT flip it: resin dominates and a few percent of scrap matters more than a shorter cycle. Scan the cost columns to see where each part's cost actually sits, then focus your negotiation or your process work there. The blended margin tells you whether a quote package meets the plant target, even if one line is thin.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** Quoting the cycle time from the mold maker's estimate instead of a proven cycle, using a press rate that excludes labor, forgetting packaging and freight, and amortizing a tool over more years than the customer commits. Also check that the press rate reflects the actual press size, not an average of the plant.

**Bullets:**

- Include inserts, labels, secondary operations as extra cost
- Keep a resin price tied to a dated supplier quote
- Re-run the sheet when the resin index moves

**Cta:** Netray can build a read-only agent over your ERP that pulls actual cycle times, scrap and resin cost per part so each quote starts from real history instead of an estimate.

**Faq:**

#### Is the target margin a markup or a margin?

**Answer:** It is margin on selling price. A 25 percent margin means gross profit is 25 percent of price, which equals a 33 percent markup on cost. Mixing the two conventions is a frequent source of underpriced quotes.

#### How do I handle a cold runner?

**Answer:** Add the runner weight divided by cavities to the part weight. If you grind and reuse the runner, reduce the effective weight by the regrind you can really reuse. The resin impact calculator in this set handles regrind explicitly.

#### What press rate should I use?

**Answer:** Use a fully burdened hourly rate for the specific press size, including operator labor, power, maintenance, depreciation and overhead. The machine hourly rate calculator can produce one if you do not have it.

#### Does the sheet include profit on tooling?

**Answer:** It amortizes tool cost at no markup. If you charge the customer for tooling separately, set mold cost to zero and quote the tool as its own line.
