#### Annual giveaway cost vs mean fill weight

**Type:** line

**X:** mean_wt

**From:** 500

**To:** 520

**Steps:** 21

**Series:**

- annual_cost

**Disclaimer:** Planning estimate assuming a normal fill distribution. Legal requirements for net content (for example the US NIST Handbook 133, EU average quantity rules or your local weights and measures law) set sample plans and limits that you must satisfy. Confirm with your own compliance procedure before changing targets.

## Content

**Intro:** Every gram above the label weight is product you give away. On a high-volume line a few grams per pack add up to a six or seven figure number. This calculator turns your mean, variation and volume into a cost and shows how much better control would save.

**Sections:**

#### How to use the calculator

**Body:** Enter the labeled weight, the mean fill weight from your checkweigher and the standard deviation of fill. Add annual volume and the product cost per kilogram. The result shows giveaway per pack, annual cost and the share of packs that fall under the label weight. Then pick a target share below label and read the mean that meets it and the annual saving. The chart sweeps mean fill weight so you can see how steeply cost rises.

**Bullets:**

- Use at least 30 consecutive packs for the standard deviation
- Use gross minus tare on the checkweigher that is calibrated
- Run the numbers per SKU, not as one average for the line

#### The formula

**Body:** Giveaway per pack is mean minus label. Annual cost is giveaway in grams times packs per year divided by 1000, times cost per kilogram. Share below label uses the normal distribution: the area to the left of (label minus mean) divided by the standard deviation. The mean needed for a target tail share is label plus z times standard deviation, where z is the standard normal value for that share.

#### Reading the result

**Body:** The biggest lever is variation, not the target. Halve the standard deviation and the mean required to hit the same compliance probability drops by the same fraction of z times sigma. Fix filler variation, feed consistency and product density before cutting the target. Watch the T1 output: any packs more than one tolerable negative error below the label are a compliance issue, so that figure should be effectively zero.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** Lowering the target without reducing variation, using a short sample to estimate sigma, ignoring moisture loss between filling and sale, mixing packaging tare into the net weight, and failing to apply the right legal sampling rule. Compliance is a legal matter, so involve your quality or regulatory lead.

**Cta:** Netray can pull checkweigher and production data from your MES or ERP to track giveaway per SKU. The calculator is free and stands on its own.

**Faq:**

#### What is giveaway?

**Answer:** Product placed in a package above the labeled net quantity. It is cost with no benefit to the customer. Some overfill is needed to stay compliant, but the target should reflect actual variation.

#### What is tolerable negative error?

**Answer:** The allowed shortfall for an individual pack below the labeled quantity, under average quantity rules such as those in the EU and many other regions. Packs below that limit are non-compliant individually.

#### How do I reduce giveaway safely?

**Answer:** Reduce variation first with better feed, filler maintenance and checkweigher feedback, then lower the target by a measured step while monitoring the share below label and the T1 limit.

#### Does moisture loss matter?

**Answer:** Yes. Products that lose moisture after packing, such as baked goods or cheese, need extra fill to still meet the label at sale. Include that loss in your target weight.
