**Type:** line

**X:** wo_qty

**From:** 10

**To:** 2000

**Steps:** 30

**Disclaimer:** Simplified serial model: each step starts after the previous one finishes, one shift pattern applies to all work centers, and lag, queue and move times are ignored. NetSuite scheduling also considers work center capacity and lag settings.

## Content

**Intro:** This calculator reproduces the basic arithmetic of a NetSuite manufacturing routing: setup time plus run rate times quantity for each routing step, summed for a work order and turned into elapsed days for your shift pattern. Use it to sanity-check routing records before production scheduling and costing rely on them.

**Sections:**

#### Where this lives in NetSuite

**Body:** Routings are at Lists, Supply Chain, Manufacturing Routing (with the Manufacturing Routing and Work Center feature enabled). Each routing belongs to a bill of materials and an assembly, and its Routing Steps subtab lists Operation Sequence, Operation Name, Manufacturing Work Center, Manufacturing Cost Template, Machine Resources, Labor Resources, Setup Time, Run Rate and the lag fields (Lag Type, Lag Amount, Lag Units). A work center is an employee group flagged as a manufacturing work center. When a work order uses a routing, the operations are copied into manufacturing operation tasks on the work order, and those carry the setup and run times used by scheduling and by completions with labor and machine time.

**Bullets:**

- Setup Time is entered in minutes per operation.
- Run Rate is the minutes to produce one unit; confirm the unit field on your routing form.

#### How to use it

**Body:** Copy setup time and run rate from each routing step into the calculator, set the work order quantity, the hours per day the work centers run and an efficiency factor that reflects real output against standard. Leave unused steps at zero. The result gives each operation's minutes, total hours, elapsed working days if operations run one after another, and the share of time spent on setups. A high setup share at typical quantities is a signal to review batch sizes or setup reduction before tuning lead times.

**Bullets:**

- op time = Setup Time + Run Rate x quantity
- elapsed days = total hours / (hours per day x efficiency)

#### Worked example

**Body:** A work order for 250 units: step 10 takes 30 + 1.2 x 250 = 330 minutes, step 20 takes 45 + 2.5 x 250 = 670 minutes and step 30 takes 15 + 0.8 x 250 = 215 minutes, a total of 1,215 minutes or 20.25 hours. At 16 hours a day and 85% efficiency, that is 20.25 / 13.6 = 1.49 working days with no overlap. Setups are 90 minutes, 7.4% of the total. At 50 units the same routing gives a setup share near 30%, which the chart makes visible.

#### Version differences and gotchas

**Body:** Planned orders from supply planning use the item's lead time fields, not routing times, so a routing change does not move planned dates until work orders are created and scheduled. Lag settings let a step start before the previous one finishes, so elapsed time in NetSuite scheduling can be shorter than this serial model. Run rates entered in the wrong unit (hours instead of minutes) are the most common routing error and inflate costs by a factor of 60 when a cost template converts time to cost.

**Cta:** If planners want to ask NetSuite which work orders will finish late and which routings drive it, in plain English on your own infrastructure, we can build that on top of your routing and work order data.

**Faq:**

#### What is a manufacturing routing in NetSuite?

**Answer:** A routing is a record that lists the ordered steps to build an assembly, each with a work center, cost template, setup time, run rate and lag. It links to a bill of materials, and work orders that use it get manufacturing operation tasks that drive scheduling, WIP completions and labor and machine costing.

#### How does NetSuite calculate operation time?

**Answer:** For each step the basic time is the setup time plus the run rate multiplied by the order quantity. NetSuite then schedules those operations against work center capacity and any lag between steps. This calculator does the first part exactly and approximates the second with a serial, single-shift model.

#### Does the routing change the work order lead time?

**Answer:** On released work orders that are scheduled, routing times drive operation start and end dates. Supply planning and planned orders rely on the item's lead time settings instead, so keep the item lead time roughly consistent with what routings produce at typical quantities, or planned dates and scheduled dates will disagree.

#### How are labor costs calculated from a routing?

**Answer:** The manufacturing cost template on each routing step defines cost categories and rates for setup and run, applied to the time recorded on completions or to the planned time. Accurate setup times and run rates matter for both standard cost rollups and actual WIP costing; check them against shop floor data periodically.
