**Type:** line

**X:** new_material

**From:** 8

**To:** 15

**Steps:** 15

**Disclaimer:** Planning estimate only. The posted amount comes from NetSuite's own revaluation transaction using actual on-hand quantity per location on the effective date.

## Content

**Intro:** This calculator sizes the financial effect of moving a NetSuite standard cost item to a new cost version before you run the revaluation. It works from the cost category values (material, labor, machine, overhead) you plan to load, and shows the on-hand revaluation, the annual COGS shift and the purchase price variance the new standard will produce.

**Sections:**

#### How to use it

**Body:** Enter the on-hand quantity you expect on the revaluation date, the current standard and the new value for each cost category. For a purchased item, labor and machine are usually zero and material carries most of the cost; for an assembly, take the values from your planned standard cost rollup. Add the units you expect to sell or consume over the next year and, for purchased items, the price you expect to pay. The primary output is the revaluation amount: quantity on hand times the change in standard. Use the chart to see how sensitive that amount is to the material cost, which is the number that moves most when supplier pricing changes.

**Bullets:**

- Run it per item or per item family before the cost version is approved
- Use location-level quantities if standards differ by location
- Enter the new standard as the purchase price for assemblies so PPV reads zero

#### Where this lives in NetSuite

**Body:** With the Standard Costing feature enabled, an item using the Standard costing method carries its cost broken down by Cost Category records, each of which has a type such as Material, Labor, Machine or Overhead. New costs are prepared as Planned Standard Cost records tied to a cost version, and assemblies can be rolled up from their components and routing. The new standard takes effect when you revalue inventory: the Revalue Inventory Cost task creates an Inventory Cost Revaluation transaction that resets the unit cost and posts the change in on-hand value. Check the offset account on that transaction and the variance accounts set on your items or accounting preferences before posting, because account names differ between accounts.

**Bullets:**

- Cost Category records: material, labor, machine, overhead, service
- Planned Standard Cost: the proposed cost by cost version
- Inventory Cost Revaluation: the transaction that applies it to on-hand stock

#### Worked example and the formulas

**Body:** With the defaults, the new standard is 11.20 + 4.10 + 2.30 + 1.60 = 19.20, up 0.80 (4.3 percent) from 18.40. Revaluing 1,200 units on hand posts 1,200 x 0.80 = 960 to inventory with the offset to the revaluation account. Over a year of 15,000 units, COGS at standard is 12,000 higher than it would have been. If you keep buying at 18.90, each receipt is 0.30 below standard, so PPV is favorable by about 4,500 a year. That last number is the one people miss: setting a standard above the real purchase price moves margin out of COGS and into a favorable variance, which looks good on the variance report and wrong on the product margin.

**Bullets:**

- new_std_cost = material + labor + machine + overhead
- revaluation = on-hand qty x (new std - old std)
- annual COGS change = annual usage x (new std - old std)
- PPV per unit = purchase price - new std (positive is unfavorable)

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** Revaluing on a date where on-hand quantity is still moving, so the posted amount does not match the estimate. Forgetting that an assembly's standard depends on its components, so revaluing components without rerunning the assembly rollup leaves the assembly standard stale. Posting into a closed period. Treating the existing standard cost rollup calculator as the same thing: a rollup tells you what the new standard should be, while this tool tells you what changing to it will cost the balance sheet and P&L. Finally, revaluing mid-month without telling the controller, which makes the inventory variance analysis at close hard to explain.

**Cta:** If you want finance to ask NetSuite which items would revalue most under a new cost version, in plain English and with the query shown, we can set that up.

**Faq:**

#### What costing methods does NetSuite support?

**Answer:** NetSuite supports Average, FIFO, LIFO, Standard, Group Average and Specific (lot or serial) costing at the item level. Standard costing needs the Standard Costing feature and suits manufacturers who want stable unit costs and variance reporting. The other methods derive cost from receipts and do not use cost versions or revaluation to a planned standard.

#### How do I change a standard cost in NetSuite?

**Answer:** Prepare the new cost as a Planned Standard Cost under a cost version, roll up assemblies if needed, then run Revalue Inventory Cost to create an Inventory Cost Revaluation transaction effective on a chosen date. That transaction resets the item cost and posts the value change of on-hand stock. Check menu names in your account, as they can vary by role.

#### Where does purchase price variance post?

**Answer:** When a standard cost item is received or billed at a price different from standard, the difference posts to the purchase price variance account defined for the item or in your accounting setup. A positive variance means you paid more than standard. Differences between the receipt and the vendor bill are posted separately when you run Post Vendor Bill Variances, so run it before reading the variance report.

#### Should I revalue at month start or month end?

**Answer:** Most teams revalue on the first day of a period after the prior period is closed, so the month's variances are all measured against one standard. Revaluing mid-period splits variances across two standards and makes reconciliation harder. Whatever date you choose, make the quantity on hand in this calculator match that date.
