## Content

**Intro:** Fixed asset reconciliations often start with a simple question: what should this asset's accumulated depreciation be after this many months? This calculator answers it for straight-line depreciation using life in months, as stored in Oracle Assets.

**Sections:**

#### How to use it

**Body:** Enter cost, salvage as a percent of cost, and the life in months from the asset's book assignment. Set months in service to the number of full depreciation periods already run. The result gives monthly depreciation, accumulated depreciation and net book value, and the chart shows both lines across ten years. Use it to sanity check a sample of assets against the Asset Details page or the Asset Reserve Detail report before a close.

**Bullets:**

- Use the depreciation periods run, not calendar months, if you have gaps.
- Check for assets with zero life or expired lives with remaining NBV.
- Confirm the salvage setting separately from the percentage convention.

#### The formula

**Body:** Straight-line depreciation is (cost - salvage) divided by life in months for each month. Accumulated depreciation after n months is the smaller of the depreciable basis and the monthly amount times n. Net book value is cost minus accumulated depreciation, and it flattens at salvage once the life is exhausted. If the first period uses a prorate convention such as half-month, the first and last periods differ slightly, which explains small differences against the system.

#### Common mistakes and ERP notes

**Body:** Differences between hand calculation and Oracle Assets are nearly always the prorate convention, a retirement or adjustment mid-life, a cost change that triggers a catch-up or prospective recalculation, or a different method on the tax book. Review the book control for the depreciation calendar and the deprn_basis_rule if the numbers disagree. Remember that corporate and tax books can differ, so check you are comparing the same book.

**Bullets:**

- Check the prorate calendar and convention for the date placed in service.
- Review amortization adjustments after cost changes.
- Reconcile to the general ledger accumulated depreciation account by category.

**Cta:** If you want asset and depreciation exceptions flagged automatically across books, we can build a read-only reconciliation helper over your EBS data.

**Faq:**

#### Does Oracle Assets use life in months?

**Answer:** Yes, the life of an asset is stored in months on its book assignment. For example a 7 year life is 84 months. Depreciation methods then apply rates or flat amounts based on that life.

#### Why does my system amount differ by a small amount?

**Answer:** The most likely cause is the prorate convention in the first period, such as half-month or mid-quarter, which changes the first and last periods. Rounding settings and prior adjustments are the next suspects.

#### How does salvage value work?

**Answer:** Salvage reduces the depreciable basis, so the asset depreciates from cost down to salvage and never below it under straight-line. You can use a percentage of cost or a fixed amount in the book assignment.

#### Can I use this for tax books?

**Answer:** Only if the tax book uses straight-line over a fixed life. Many tax methods, such as declining balance or table-based rates, are different, and you should use the method defined in the tax book.
