**Notes:** IDs below 10000 are seeded system types, and user-defined types start from higher numbers. Confirm against MTL_TRANSACTION_TYPES on your instance, since some types are only present when the related module is installed.

## Content

**Intro:** Every row in MTL_MATERIAL_TRANSACTIONS carries a TRANSACTION_TYPE_ID that tells you what happened and why on-hand moved. This table lists the common types so you can read transaction history and write reports without guessing.

**Sections:**

#### How to use this reference

**Body:** Search by name or by ID. When you are debugging an on-hand discrepancy, filter MTL_MATERIAL_TRANSACTIONS by item and organization, then use this table to translate the TRANSACTION_TYPE_ID values into plain language. Export to Excel to add the descriptions next to a data extract that you hand to a cost accountant.

#### Type, action and source

**Body:** A transaction in Oracle Inventory is defined by three things: the transaction type, the transaction action, and the transaction source type. The type is the business event, the action says whether it issues, receives or transfers, and the source type points to the document, such as a job, purchase order or sales order. User-defined types are built from a seeded action and source type pair.

**Bullets:**

- Transaction type: the named business event
- Transaction action: issue, receipt, transfer, adjust
- Source type: job, PO, sales order, account, alias
- Source ID points to the specific document

#### Reading the on-hand effect

**Body:** Subinventory transfers do not change organization on-hand, but they do change what is available in a given subinventory and locator. Direct org transfers and intransit shipments change both. WIP issues and returns affect components, while completions and assembly returns affect the finished item. Reconcile these against the accounting entries in MTL_TRANSACTION_ACCOUNTS.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** People often treat a miscellaneous issue as equivalent to a scrap or a WIP return, which breaks cost traceability. Another mistake is hard-coding type IDs in custom code, even though IDs for user-defined types differ between instances. Join to MTL_TRANSACTION_TYPES by name or ID from the same instance instead.

**Cta:** If you often explain on-hand movements to finance, we can build an assistant on your EBS data that reads transaction history and explains it in words.

**Faq:**

#### Where are Oracle inventory transaction types stored?

**Answer:** They live in MTL_TRANSACTION_TYPES, with the name in TRANSACTION_TYPE_NAME and the action and source type in related columns. Material movements are in MTL_MATERIAL_TRANSACTIONS.

#### Can I create my own transaction type?

**Answer:** Yes. In the Transaction Types window you can define a user type from a seeded transaction action and source type. It is the supported way to separate, for example, a scrap issue from a general miscellaneous issue.

#### What is the difference between WIP Issue and Backflush?

**Answer:** WIP Issue is a manual or push issue of components to a job. Backflush Transfer and the related issues happen automatically when assemblies are completed or operations are moved, based on the supply type.

#### Why do some IDs differ in my instance?

**Answer:** Seeded IDs are standard, but user-defined types get new IDs per instance. Always join on the table in your own database rather than relying on a copied list.
