**Unit:** GB

#### Sustained backup throughput

**Key:** backup_mbps

**Type:** number

**Default:** 400

**Min:** 1

**Step:** 25

**Unit:** MB/s

**Help:** Measure it with a previous RMAN run, not a datasheet.

**Step:** 25

**Unit:** MB/s

#### Backup taken inside the outage?

##### Yes, cold or consistent backup in window

**Value:** 1

##### No, backup done earlier

**Value:** 0

#### Planned work duration

**Key:** work_hours

**Type:** number

**Default:** 25

**Min:** 0

**Max:** 100

**Step:** 5

**Unit:** %

**Outputs:**

#### Backup time

**Key:** backup_h

**Expr:** backup_in_window * db_gb * 1024 / backup_mbps / 3600

**Format:** hours

#### Restore time if rolled back

**Key:** restore_h

**Expr:** db_gb * 1024 / restore_mbps / 3600

**Format:** hours

#### Planned outage window

**Key:** window

**Expr:** (backup_h + work_hours + validation_hours) * (1 + contingency_pct / 100)

**Format:** hours

**Primary:** true

#### Worst case with rollback

**Key:** worst_case

**Expr:** window + restore_h

**Format:** hours

**Primary:** true

**Description:** Planned window plus a full restore, if the change must be abandoned late.

**Chart:**

#### Outage window vs backup throughput

**Type:** line

**X:** backup_mbps

**From:** 50

**To:** 1500

**Steps:** 30

**Series:**

- window

**Disclaimer:** Throughput varies with compression, encryption, channels and storage contention. Use measured numbers from a recent backup and a test restore.

## Content

**Intro:** Change boards ask for an outage window in hours. This calculator builds that number from database size, measured backup speed, the work itself and a contingency buffer, and shows the worst case if you have to restore.

**Sections:**

#### How to use it

**Body:** Start with the size of the data that must be protected before the change. Enter sustained backup and restore throughput measured from your last full backup and your last restore test. Choose whether the backup runs inside the outage; if your approach is a flashback restore point, a snapshot or a standby, set it to no and put the preparation time in work hours. Add planned work, validation time and a contingency buffer. The tool returns the planned window and a worst case with rollback.

**Bullets:**

- Include the time to stop and start application tier services.
- Use smoke test hours that cover finance, supply chain and integrations.
- Plan the go or no-go decision point before the restore becomes unavoidable.

#### The arithmetic

**Body:** Time in hours is size in GB times 1024 divided by throughput in MB per second, divided by 3600. A 1,500 GB database at 400 MB/s needs about 1.1 hours to back up. The planned window multiplies the sum of backup, work and validation by one plus the contingency fraction. Worst case adds a complete restore at restore throughput, which is usually slower than backup, so rollback is the number the business should hear about.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** People plan from the peak speed of the storage array, which is never sustained across a full backup. Another mistake is forgetting that recovery includes applying redo and opening the database, not just copying datafiles. Finally, many windows ignore the time to validate. Run a restore rehearsal at least once so your restore throughput is a measured figure, and use incremental or block-change approaches where the window is too long.

**Bullets:**

- Measure, do not estimate, restore speed.
- Allow for compression and encryption CPU cost.
- Confirm tape or object storage rates when backups are off-site.

**Cta:** If you want maintenance runbooks generated and checked against your own environment's history, we can help build that on-prem with approvals before any action.

**Faq:**

#### How do I measure backup throughput?

**Answer:** Divide the backup set size by elapsed time from your last full RMAN run, using the RMAN log or the V$RMAN_BACKUP_JOB_DETAILS view. Use the sustained figure across the whole run rather than the peak.

#### Is a backup always needed inside the window?

**Answer:** Not always. A guaranteed restore point, storage snapshot or standby can provide the rollback path without copying all data in the outage. Choose what your recovery objectives and the change board require.

#### What contingency buffer is reasonable?

**Answer:** Twenty to fifty percent is common for first-time changes and less for rehearsed ones. The right figure comes from rehearsal results: if the dry run overran by a third, use at least that much.

#### Does restore time include database recovery?

**Answer:** This calculator covers datafile copy only. Add time for applying archived redo, opening the database, and restarting application tier services in the work or validation hours.
