**Outputs:**

#### Earned standard component qty

**Key:** std_qty_total

**Expr:** qty_completed * std_qty_per

**Format:** number

**Description:** Quantity the standard allows for the units completed.

#### Material usage variance

**Key:** usage_var

**Expr:** (std_qty_total - actual_qty) * mat_cost

**Format:** currency

**Description:** Positive is favorable, negative is unfavorable.

#### Resource efficiency variance

**Key:** eff_var

**Expr:** (qty_completed * std_hours - actual_hours) * std_rate

**Format:** currency

**Description:** Earned hours minus actual hours, valued at the standard rate.

#### Resource rate variance

**Key:** rate_var

**Expr:** (std_rate - actual_rate) * actual_hours

**Format:** currency

**Description:** Rate difference applied to actual hours.

#### Total job variance

**Key:** total_var

**Expr:** usage_var + eff_var + rate_var

**Format:** currency

**Primary:** true

**Description:** Sum of the three variances. Negative is unfavorable (debit to the variance accounts).

#### Variance as percent of standard job cost

**Key:** pct_of_std

**Expr:** total_var / (qty_completed * std_qty_per * mat_cost + qty_completed * std_hours * std_rate) * 100

**Format:** percent

**Chart:**

#### Variance vs actual resource hours

**Type:** line

**X:** actual_hours

**From:** 20

**To:** 70

**Steps:** 26

**Series:**

- eff_var
- rate_var
- total_var

**Disclaimer:** Illustrative arithmetic for standard costed discrete jobs. Overhead absorption, scrap accounts and your accounting class variance accounts are not modelled. Confirm against the WIP Value Summary and Discrete Job Value Report in your instance.

## Content

**Intro:** When you close a standard costed discrete job in Oracle E-Business Suite, the difference between what the job absorbed and what the standard says it should have cost is posted to variance accounts. This calculator splits that difference into the three variances your cost accountant will ask about.

**Sections:**

#### How to use the calculator

**Body:** Enter the quantity completed, the standard component quantity per assembly and what was actually issued, then the routing hours and rates. The earned standard is always based on units completed, not units started, so a job that scrapped units shows up as a usage or efficiency variance. Change any input and the three variances and the total update immediately. Use the chart to see how the total moves as actual hours rise or fall around the standard, which is useful when you need to explain what an overrun of five or ten hours does to the close.

**Bullets:**

- Use net issues (issues less returns) for actual quantity
- Use hours, not minutes, for both standard and actual
- Leave actual rate equal to standard rate if the resource is charged at standard

#### The formulas

**Body:** Material usage variance is (standard quantity allowed minus actual quantity) times standard cost. Resource efficiency variance is (standard hours allowed minus actual hours) times standard rate. Resource rate variance is (standard rate minus actual rate) times actual hours. All three are written so a positive number is favorable and a negative number is unfavorable. In Oracle Work in Process these amounts land in the material usage, resource efficiency and resource rate variance accounts defined on the WIP accounting class, so the totals here should be comparable to the Discrete Job Value Report once you account for overhead.

#### Worked example

**Body:** With the defaults, 100 units at 2.5 per assembly earn 250 units of the component but 262 were issued: 12 extra at 4.80 gives a usage variance of minus 57.60. Earned hours are 40 but 43 were charged at 38: minus 114.00 efficiency. The actual rate of 41 versus 38 across 43 hours gives minus 129.00 rate variance. The total is minus 300.60, about 1.8 percent of the standard job cost. Seeing the split tells you whether to talk to the floor about usage, to the planner about routing hours, or to HR and finance about rates.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** Teams often read the total and ignore the split, or compare the variance to units started instead of units completed. Another frequent error is leaving a closed job's unfinished quantity out of the picture: a partially completed job closed with remaining WIP produces a different variance than the full completion case. Remember too that a job closed with unreleased charges, uncollected resource transactions or open material requirements will not tie to the calculator until those are cleaned up. Finally, average costing organizations do not post these standard variances the same way, so use this tool for standard costing only.

**Cta:** If you want these variances pulled live from your EBS instance by job, assembly or class without building another custom report, Netray can set that up read-only over your data.

**Faq:**

#### Does this match the Oracle WIP variance accounts?

**Answer:** The three variance concepts match what Work in Process posts at job close for standard costed jobs. Overhead, scrap and outside processing handling depend on your setup, so treat the result as a check on the main drivers rather than a ledger reconciliation.

#### What does a negative number mean?

**Answer:** Negative means unfavorable: the job consumed more than the standard allowed for the units completed. In accounting terms that is a debit to the variance account. A positive value means the job cost less than standard.

#### Why use units completed, not units started?

**Answer:** Standard cost is earned on completions. Units that were started but scrapped or left in WIP earned nothing, so any material or hours spent on them appear as variance. That is what makes yield problems visible at close.

#### Does this work for average costing?

**Answer:** No. Average costing organizations do not carry a standard to compare against in the same way. Use it for standard costing organizations, and review variances for average cost jobs through your own cost management reports.
