**Chart:**

#### Lead time in working days vs order quantity

**Type:** line

**X:** qty

**From:** 10

**To:** 2000

**Disclaimer:** Treats queue and move time as elapsed working hours on a single operation. Multi-operation routings should sum operations and consider overlap.

## Content

**Intro:** Planning is only as good as its lead times. Oracle Fusion planning uses item lead time attributes, including fixed and variable lead time, or lead times derived from work definitions. This calculator builds those figures from shop floor facts instead of copying a legacy number.

**Sections:**

#### How to use it

**Body:** Enter a typical work order quantity and the setup time for the operation. Add run time per unit and a realistic efficiency, since standard rates are rarely achieved. Queue time is how long a job waits at the work center, and move time covers transport and inspection waits. Set the working hours per day for the center. The result is lead time in working days, a fixed portion and a variable per-unit portion. Use those to set or validate the lead time attributes planning relies on.

#### The method

**Body:** Lead time equals setup plus run plus queue plus move. Setup, queue and move are largely independent of quantity, so they form the fixed lead time. Run time scales with quantity, so it forms the variable lead time per unit. Dividing by hours per day converts to working days. The share of touch time shows how much of the order time is value-adding. In most job shops it is under 10%, which is why queue time reductions pay off more than speeding up run rates.

**Bullets:**

- Fixed lead time = (setup + queue + move) / hours per day
- Variable lead time = run per unit / efficiency / hours per day
- Total = fixed + variable x quantity

#### Pitfalls

**Body:** Do not use average queue time from a quiet month; use a figure that reflects normal load, or planning will release orders late. Do not mix calendar days and working days, since planning follows the organization calendar. Multi-step routings need each operation added, minus any overlap where a job moves on before the full lot finishes. Re-check lead times after layout changes, new equipment or changes in shop load.

**Cta:** If you would like lead times compared against actual work order durations from Oracle, we can build that analysis. It is optional and the calculator is free to use.

**Faq:**

#### What are fixed and variable lead time?

**Answer:** Fixed lead time is the time that does not depend on quantity, such as setup, queue and move. Variable lead time is the extra time per unit. Total lead time is fixed plus variable multiplied by order quantity.

#### Should I use calendar or working days?

**Answer:** Use working days if your planning calendar excludes weekends and holidays, and let the system convert. Mixing the two causes systematic early or late planned dates. Match the unit to the organization calendar in your setup.

#### Why include efficiency?

**Answer:** Standard run rates describe ideal operation. Real output includes micro stops, rework and operator variation, so an efficiency below 100% gives a lead time that planners can trust. Take efficiency from historical production reporting.

#### How do I handle several operations?

**Answer:** Calculate each operation, then add them in sequence, subtracting overlap if lots are split across operations. Queue time usually occurs before every operation, so it can dominate multi-step routings.
