**Disclaimer:** Rule-of-thumb estimate for early planning. Detailed layout, fire code, equipment drawings and local building regulations govern final design.

## Content

**Intro:** Early expansion discussions need a floor area number before any layout drawing exists. This calculator builds one from machine footprint, clearance, pallet storage, support space and a growth margin, in square metres and square feet.

**Sections:**

#### How to use it

**Body:** Enter the number of machines or stations and the average footprint of the machine body. Choose the clearance multiplier: it converts machine area into the working area including operators, tooling carts and local aisles. Add pallet positions for raw material and work in process, then the support share and growth allowance. The result is a rough-cut figure to compare with candidate buildings.

#### The method

**Body:** Production area equals machines times footprint times clearance. Storage area equals pallet positions times area per position times an aisle multiplier. Support space is a percentage of the sum, and growth is applied to the total. This follows the simple area-by-component method used in early facility planning, before systematic layout planning is done.

**Bullets:**

- Typical clearance multipliers range from about 2 to 4
- A standard pallet takes about 1.0 to 1.2 m2 before aisles
- Racked storage reduces floor area per position, so reduce the area input

#### Worked example

**Body:** With 24 machines of 6 m2 at 2.5, production area is 360 m2. With 180 pallet positions of 1.4 m2 and an aisle multiplier of 2, storage is 504 m2. Together 864 m2. Support at 20 percent adds about 173 m2, giving 1,037 m2. A 15 percent growth allowance brings the total to about 1,193 m2, or roughly 12,800 square feet.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** People often use nameplate dimensions without door swings, tool change access or crane reach. They also forget inspection areas, scrap and returns, packing, charging areas for forklifts and maintenance cribs. If the estimate comes in much lower than similar plants, check what is missing before trusting it.

**Cta:** If space planning is tied to ERP routings and WIP levels, Netray can help pull actual WIP and throughput numbers from your system. The calculator does not need that.

**Faq:**

#### How accurate is this estimate?

**Answer:** It is good to about plus or minus 20 to 30 percent for early planning if the inputs are realistic. It is not a substitute for a layout drawing, equipment vendor data or local code review.

#### What clearance multiplier should I choose?

**Answer:** Use 2 for compact cells, 2.5 for typical machining, 3 for large equipment with forklift access and 4 for heavy assembly. Calibrate the number against your existing plant by dividing used area by machine footprint.

#### Does the result include warehouse space?

**Answer:** Only the pallet positions you enter. Finished goods and distribution warehousing should be added as pallet positions or calculated separately.

#### How do I calibrate to my current plant?

**Answer:** Divide your current production floor area by total machine footprint to get your real clearance multiplier. Use that in place of the generic options.
