## Content

**Intro:** Plant maintenance windows are short and expensive, so guessing is risky. This calculator turns server count, parallelism and timing into a window length with a built-in rollback buffer.

**Sections:**

#### How to use the calculator

**Body:** Enter the number of servers and how many you can patch at once, then the install and reboot time per server from your last event. Add a validation block and a buffer. The recommended window is shown in minutes and hours, and the chart sweeps the number of parallel streams so you can see where adding people stops helping.

#### The formula

**Body:** Batches equal servers divided by streams, rounded up. Elapsed patching time is batches multiplied by install plus reboot time. Validation is added once at the end, and the buffer multiplies the total. Server-hours of work is the labor view, independent of parallelism. This is a simplified serial-batch model and does not reflect dependency ordering.

**Bullets:**

- Batches = ceil(servers / streams)
- Elapsed = batches x (install + reboot)
- Window = (elapsed + validation) x (1 + buffer)

#### Reading the result

**Body:** With 12 servers, 3 streams, 35 minutes of install and 15 of reboot, there are 4 batches of 50 minutes, 200 minutes of patching, 230 with validation and about 299 with a 30 percent buffer, close to 5 hours. If the window offered is 4 hours, increase parallel streams, split the scope or reduce the server list.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** Do not assume all servers can run in parallel: database, application and domain tiers have an order. Do not use vendor install times from a lab, and do not skip the buffer, because rollback decisions are made late in the window. Always decide a go or no-go time before you start.

**Cta:** Netray can discuss automating post-patch ERP health checks so the validation step is shorter and more consistent.

**Faq:**

#### How big should the rollback buffer be?

**Answer:** Many teams use 20 to 50 percent, higher for first-time changes or ERP databases. Base it on how long a rollback takes and how much of the window must remain when you decide to roll back.

#### Does parallel patching always shorten the window?

**Answer:** Only up to your constraints. Shared storage, network bandwidth, staff and dependency order limit useful parallelism. The chart shows diminishing returns once batches fall to one or two.

#### Should validation be per server or at the end?

**Answer:** This model adds one final validation. If each server needs its own checks, include that time in the per-server reboot and start figure instead.

#### Can I use this for ERP upgrades?

**Answer:** It suits OS and platform patches. For ERP upgrades with database conversions, add the data migration time to the install field and test timing in a copy of production first.
