## Content

**Intro:** A wage of 24 an hour does not cost 24 for each hour of real work. Payroll burden, holidays and idle time raise the cost of a productive hour, often by 50 percent or more. This calculator makes the build-up visible.

**Sections:**

#### How to use it

**Body:** Enter the base wage, the burden percentage from finance (payroll taxes, benefits, insurance, pension), paid hours per year and time paid but not worked. Set utilization as the share of attended time spent on productive work after breaks, meetings, waiting and rework. Add supervision or indirect labor you allocate per paid hour. The result is the cost per productive hour.

#### The method

**Body:** Annual loaded cost equals wage times paid hours times one plus burden, plus the per hour overhead allocation times paid hours. Productive hours equal paid hours minus paid time off, times utilization. The cost per productive hour is loaded cost divided by productive hours. This is the same logic as a labor absorption rate in a standard costing exercise.

**Bullets:**

- Burden typically sits in the 25 to 45 percent range in many countries
- Use actual leave records where possible
- Keep productive and attended time definitions consistent with your ERP labor reporting

#### Worked example

**Body:** At a 24 wage and 2,080 paid hours, wage cost is 49,920. With 32 percent burden it becomes 65,894, and 4 per hour overhead adds 8,320, giving 74,214. After 200 hours off, 1,880 are at work and at 82 percent utilization 1,542 are productive. Cost per productive hour is about 48.13, roughly 100 percent above the base wage.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** Quoting with the base wage, double counting overhead already in a machine rate, and using the same utilization for all roles are common errors. Review the chart: dropping utilization from 85 to 70 percent adds almost a fifth to the cost of each productive hour, which often exceeds the benefit of a wage negotiation.

**Cta:** If your ERP captures labor reporting, Netray can help compare reported utilization with the assumption used here. This calculator needs nothing from us.

**Faq:**

#### What is a typical burden rate?

**Answer:** It varies widely by country and benefits package. Many manufacturers see roughly 25 to 45 percent of wage. Ask payroll for the real figure instead of using a rule of thumb.

#### Should overtime be included?

**Answer:** Not in the base calculation. Model overtime separately, since premium rates apply only to part of the hours. You can approximate by raising the wage input to a blended rate.

#### How is this different from a machine rate?

**Answer:** A machine rate covers equipment cost per hour: depreciation, power, maintenance and floor space. Labor cost per productive hour covers only people. Quote both, avoiding double counting of indirect labor.

#### Where does utilization come from?

**Answer:** Labor reporting, work sampling or time studies. Anything above 90 percent for direct labor is rare once breaks, meetings and waiting are counted.
