## Content

**Intro:** Port counts are the cheapest thing to plan and the most annoying to get wrong. This worksheet gives each plant area a ports-required figure, switch count and spare capacity, so the next cell or camera does not become a project of its own.

**Sections:**

#### How to use the worksheet

**Body:** Add one row per closet, cell or area. Count the wired devices that actually need a port today, including printers, scales, barcode stations, PLCs, HMIs, cameras and access points. Enter a growth allowance based on how fast that area changes, then uplink and stack ports and the port count of the switch model you use. The sheet computes required ports, number of switches, installed capacity and spare ports. Export to Excel for purchasing and as-built records.

**Bullets:**

- Walk the area, do not trust old diagrams
- Use higher growth for lines being expanded
- Keep 20 percent spare as a starting policy

#### The calculation

**Body:** Ports required is devices times one plus the growth percentage, rounded up, plus uplink ports. Switches needed is ports required divided by ports per switch, rounded up, because you cannot buy half a switch. Installed capacity is switches times ports per switch, and spare ports is capacity minus ports required. The summary shows spare share overall, which tells you if the whole plant is running too tight.

#### Reading the results

**Body:** A spare share under about 10 percent means almost any change will force new hardware. Very high spare means you may be over-buying. Pay attention to areas with a single switch and one uplink, which are single points of failure. In cells with PLCs, consider managed industrial switches with rings or redundancy, and plan for DIN-rail power and environment ratings rather than office-grade gear.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** Ignoring PoE power budgets, mixing OT and IT traffic on a flat network, forgetting ports for temporary equipment and vendor laptops, and not recording what each port connects to. Pair this sheet with a segmentation plan and a patching schedule, and update the counts whenever a line is moved or a new machine is commissioned.

**Cta:** If port, device and asset data lives in separate spreadsheets, Netray can help turn it into one searchable inventory your team can query in plain language.

**Faq:**

#### How many spare ports should I keep?

**Answer:** Many teams keep 15 to 25 percent spare per closet. Fast-changing areas like new assembly lines may need more, and static offices less. Revisit after each expansion.

#### Do uplinks count against the switch ports?

**Answer:** Yes, if uplinks use the same front-panel ports. Some switches have dedicated uplink ports. Enter only the uplink ports that consume ports from the total you are counting.

#### How do I plan PoE?

**Answer:** Add up the maximum watts of each PoE device and compare it to the switch PoE budget, not the port count. Cameras and access points can use 10 to 30 watts each, so budget can run out before ports do.

#### Should OT devices share switches with office devices?

**Answer:** Generally no. Separate switches or at least separate VLANs with controlled routing between them, in line with a segmentation approach such as the Purdue model, reduce risk and troubleshooting time.
