#### Lowest utilization

**Key:** worst_util

**Expr:** min_util

**Format:** percent

**Description:** Jobs far below the average are candidates for re-nesting.

**Notes:** Utilization here counts blank area only. Skeleton, kerf and remnant value are not included, so treat the cost per part as an upper bound unless offcuts are returned to stock. Prices are placeholders.

## Content

**Intro:** Material is often the largest part of a sheet metal quote. This worksheet calculates sheet weight, nesting utilization and material cost per part for each job so you can compare nests and quote with confidence.

**Sections:**

#### How to use the worksheet

**Body:** Add one row per part or nest. Enter thickness, density, sheet size, the blank area of the part and how many parts your nesting software fits on one sheet, plus the price per kg. The sheet columns compute weight, utilization, sheet cost and material cost per part. Edit the example rows, add your own and export to Excel for the quote file. Compare utilization across jobs to find nests worth redoing.

**Bullets:**

- Use the blank area, not the finished area, after bends
- Take parts per sheet from the nesting report
- Update price per kg from the latest mill or service center quote
- Export to Excel to attach to the estimate

#### The method

**Body:** Sheet weight in kg equals length times width times thickness in mm, times density in g/cm3, divided by one million. Utilization equals the total blank area of all parts on the sheet divided by the sheet area. Material cost per part is the sheet cost divided by parts per sheet, which charges each part its share of skeleton scrap. This is the convention most estimators use. If offcuts are reused, credit them separately instead of lowering the price per kg.

#### Reading the results

**Body:** In the example, the 3 mm carbon steel bracket on a 2,500 by 1,250 sheet weighs about 73.6 kg and, with 120 parts, uses roughly 69 percent of the sheet at about 0.67 per part. A utilization below 60 percent for rectangular parts usually means the nest can improve, while irregular parts with many holes are naturally lower. Raising utilization by five points cuts material cost per part by about the same relative amount, which compounds on high volume jobs.

#### Common mistakes and ERP notes

**Body:** Common mistakes are using finished weight instead of sheet weight, using the wrong density for alloys, and ignoring kerf and the sheet's usable area. In ERP, materials are normally costed per kg or per sheet on the item, and the BOM quantity per part should reflect the nest share. Keep standard and actual yield aligned, since a gap between the two shows up as purchase price or usage variance on the shop order.

**Bullets:**

- Confirm density for the exact alloy
- Reflect nest yield in BOM scrap or quantity per
- Separate remnant credit from the base price
- Review utilization when sheet sizes change

**Cta:** If BOM quantities do not reflect real nesting yield, we can help reconcile standard and actual material usage in your ERP.

**Faq:**

#### How is nesting utilization calculated?

**Answer:** Add up the blank area of every part on the sheet and divide by the sheet area, then multiply by 100. It measures how much of the sheet becomes parts instead of skeleton. Nesting software reports the same figure, usually including kerf.

#### What density should I use for steel and aluminum?

**Answer:** Carbon steel is about 7.85 g/cm3, 304 stainless about 7.93 and aluminum 5052 about 2.68. Check the supplier datasheet for the exact alloy, since a few percent error flows directly into the cost estimate.

#### Why is cost per part based on the whole sheet?

**Answer:** Because you buy the whole sheet. Dividing sheet cost by parts per sheet allocates the skeleton scrap to the parts. If remnants are reused, credit them separately so the quote stays honest.

#### Can I export this to Excel?

**Answer:** Yes. Every worksheet exports to Excel, CSV and PDF from the page. The computed columns export with their values, so the file can be attached to a quote or imported into an estimating sheet.
