## Tool

**Kind:** calculator

**Inputs:**

#### Planned production time

**Help:** Shift length minus planned breaks and scheduled stops.

#### Unplanned stop time

**Key:** downtime

**Type:** number

**Default:** 55

**Min:** 0

**Step:** 5

**Unit:** minutes

**Help:** Breakdowns, changeovers and waiting that were not scheduled.

#### Ideal cycle time

**Key:** ideal_cycle

**Type:** number

**Default:** 30

**Min:** 0.1

**Step:** 0.5

**Unit:** seconds per part

**Help:** Fastest sustainable cycle, not the average you achieve.

#### Total parts produced

**Key:** total_count

**Type:** number

**Default:** 780

**Min:** 0

**Step:** 10

**Unit:** parts

#### Rejected or scrapped parts

**Key:** reject_count

**Type:** slider

**Default:** 16

**Min:** 0

**Max:** 200

**Step:** 1

**Unit:** parts

**Outputs:**

#### Run time

**Key:** run_time

**Expr:** planned_time - downtime

**Format:** minutes

#### Availability

**Key:** availability

**Expr:** run_time / planned_time * 100

**Format:** percent

#### Performance

**Key:** performance

**Expr:** ideal_cycle * total_count / 60 / run_time * 100

**Format:** percent

**Description:** Values above 100 percent mean the ideal cycle time is set too slow.

#### Quality

**Key:** quality

**Expr:** (total_count - reject_count) / total_count * 100

**Format:** percent

#### OEE

**Key:** oee

**Expr:** availability * performance * quality / 10000

**Format:** percent

**Primary:** true

#### Good parts

**Key:** good_count

**Expr:** total_count - reject_count

**Format:** integer

**Primary:** true

**Chart:**

#### OEE and quality vs rejects

**Type:** line

**X:** reject_count

**From:** 0

**To:** 200

**Steps:** 21

**Series:**

- oee
- quality

**Disclaimer:** Uses the common three-factor OEE definition. Your site may classify losses differently, so align definitions with your own standard.

## Content

**Intro:** OEE condenses availability, performance and quality into one number. This calculator shows how the three factors combine and which one is holding the result down, using the same arithmetic MES platforms apply to machine data.

**Sections:**

#### How to use it

**Body:** Enter planned production time for the period, the unplanned stop time within it, and the ideal cycle time per part. Then enter total parts produced and rejects. The tool derives run time, availability, performance and quality and multiplies them. Pick the ideal cycle time carefully: it is the fastest rate the machine can sustain, usually from the design or a proven best run. If you use an average cycle instead, performance will look better than reality.

**Bullets:**

- Exclude planned breaks from planned time
- Count all rejects, including rework not yet recovered
- Use consistent ideal cycle times across shifts
- Compare machines by loss category, not only by total

#### The formulas

**Body:** Availability is run time divided by planned production time. Performance is ideal cycle time times total parts divided by run time. Quality is good parts divided by total parts. OEE is the product of the three. A useful shortcut is that OEE equals ideal cycle time times good parts divided by planned time, which shows that downtime and speed losses are both captured through the parts you did not make.

#### Reading the result

**Body:** Many discrete manufacturers sit well below world-class benchmarks and that is normal at the start. What matters is the biggest factor loss. A low availability points to breakdowns and changeovers, a low performance to slow cycles and micro-stops, a low quality to scrap and rework. Because the factors multiply, a gap in each of three factors compounds quickly. The chart shows how sensitive OEE is to rejects at the chosen volume.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** Setting the ideal cycle at the current average hides speed loss. Treating changeover as planned time removes a large, fixable loss from the metric; decide the policy and apply it consistently. Averaging OEE across machines without weighting by planned time distorts the plant figure. And finally, chasing OEE on a non-bottleneck machine can raise inventory without raising output.

**Cta:** If your OEE data lives in an MES and you would like questions answered about it in plain language on your own infrastructure, Netray can discuss how.

**Faq:**

#### Is this the same OEE Plex shows?

**Answer:** It uses the standard availability times performance times quality definition, which most MES platforms follow. Loss classification, ideal rates and planned-time rules are configured per site, so your system may differ slightly.

#### What if performance is above 100 percent?

**Answer:** It means the machine ran faster than the ideal cycle time you entered. Either the ideal figure is outdated or wrongly set. Correct it rather than capping, otherwise you lose the signal.

#### Should rework count as a reject?

**Answer:** Under the strict definition, parts that need rework are not good first time and reduce quality. Many sites track first pass yield this way. Choose a policy and keep it consistent.

#### What is a good OEE?

**Answer:** Commonly quoted benchmarks exist, but they depend on process type. Compare against your own history and similar equipment, and focus on the largest loss category rather than a single target figure.
