## Content

**Intro:** Powder coat pricing is usually quoted per square foot or per piece, and both depend on the coated area. This calculator turns part dimensions into surface area, estimates powder consumed at your film thickness and combines it with labor and line cost.

**Sections:**

#### How to use it

**Body:** Enter the flat part length, width and thickness, then subtract hole area and add hole edge length. Choose one or both sides and add a form allowance for bends and flanges, 10 to 20 percent for typical brackets and enclosures. Set film thickness, powder specific gravity and an effective usage efficiency. Add powder price, hang and spray labor, line cost and throughput, masking and target margin. The result is cost per part, price per part and price per square foot.

**Bullets:**

- Take specific gravity from the powder technical data sheet.
- Use effective efficiency, not nozzle transfer efficiency, if you reclaim powder.
- Add masking cost where plugs, tape or caps are required.

#### Formulas and sources

**Body:** Coated area is sides times the face area less cutouts, plus the edge area of the outline and the cutouts, scaled by the form allowance. Theoretical powder coverage at 1 mil and 100 percent efficiency is 192.3 divided by specific gravity, in square feet per pound; this is the standard coverage rule used on powder data sheets. Powder used is area times film thickness in mils, divided by coverage, divided by efficiency. Line cost per part is the hourly line cost divided by parts per hour. Price equals cost divided by one minus margin.

#### Reading the result

**Body:** At defaults the part has about 0.5 sq ft per side before edges and form allowance, 1.2 sq ft in total, and uses a few hundredths of a pound of powder, so powder is a small share of cost. Labor and line cost dominate on small parts, which is why shops quote minimums and batch pricing. The chart shows powder cost rising linearly with film thickness; thicker films also lengthen cure and risk orange peel and runs.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** Quoting only on powder weight ignores pretreatment, racking and oven time that make up most of the price. Another is ignoring the second side or the edges, and using nozzle transfer efficiency for a system that reclaims powder.

**Cta:** If finishing costs are kept outside your ERP quote, Netray can help bring them into the same model. Ask for an expert review of how your outside and in-house finishing is costed.

**Faq:**

#### How do I calculate powder coating surface area?

**Answer:** Multiply length by width for each coated side, subtract cutout area, then add edge area (perimeter times thickness) and a form allowance for bends. Convert square inches to square feet by dividing by 144. For complex parts use CAD surface area.

#### How much powder does it take to coat a square foot?

**Answer:** At 1 mil and 100 percent efficiency a powder of specific gravity 1.5 covers about 128 square feet per pound. At 3 mils and 70 percent efficiency, one square foot uses roughly 0.034 pounds. Check your powder data sheet for actual coverage.

#### What film thickness should I quote?

**Answer:** Most architectural and industrial polyester finishes call for 2 to 4 mils, and some specifications set minimum and maximum. Quote to the specification on the drawing or purchase order, not to the thickest you can spray.

#### Why is the minimum charge so high?

**Answer:** Pretreatment, oven loading and color changes have fixed costs that do not scale with part size. A minimum lot charge covers them, so small batches carry a high price per part. The line cost term in this tool captures that.
