**Disclaimer:** Single product, two factor bridge. For several products add a separate mix variance. Positive values increase margin versus budget.

## Content

**Intro:** A margin bridge answers the question every controller gets at the review: why is gross margin different from budget? This calculator splits the gap into price, volume and unit cost effects for a single product or product family.

**Sections:**

#### How to use it

**Body:** Enter budget units, price and unit cost, then the actual figures for the same period. Use averages over the period for price and cost. The three effects add up exactly to the difference between actual and budget gross margin, and the check line proves it. Use one product or a family with a stable mix.

**Bullets:**

- Use net price after discounts and rebates
- Use the same cost basis in budget and actual
- Run one scenario per product line, then add them up

#### The method

**Body:** Price variance is the price difference times actual units. Volume variance is the unit difference times the budget margin per unit. Cost variance is the budget cost per unit minus the actual cost per unit, times actual units. Because price and cost are both evaluated on actual units and volume at budget margin, the three pieces sum to actual margin minus budget margin with no remainder.

#### Worked example

**Body:** With the default numbers, budget margin is 10,000 x 16 = 160,000. Actual margin is 9,200 x 15.5 = 142,600. Price adds 18,400, volume subtracts 12,800 and unit cost subtracts 23,000, for a total of minus 17,400. The story is that the team sold less and cost per unit rose by more than the price increase recovered.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** Using list price instead of net price hides discount leakage. Mixing a standard cost in the budget with an actual cost in the results makes the cost variance include a costing method change. For multi product businesses, summing product level bridges is more accurate than running one blended bridge, because mix then appears explicitly.

**Cta:** If building this bridge each month means pulling sales and cost data from several reports, Netray can automate it from your ERP data with the queries shown.

**Faq:**

#### Why is volume valued at budget margin?

**Answer:** Because volume variance asks what extra or missing units would have earned at the planned margin. Price and cost effects are then measured on the units actually sold, which avoids counting the same dollars twice.

#### Can I use this for revenue only?

**Answer:** Yes. Set budget cost and actual cost to zero and the bridge becomes a price and volume revenue analysis. The cost variance output will then be zero.

#### What about product mix?

**Answer:** This tool handles one product. For several products, run each separately and sum the price, volume and cost lines. The difference between the sum of product volume effects and a blended volume effect is the mix effect.

#### Does this replace my FP&A model?

**Answer:** No. It is a quick way to check or explain a margin gap. Your planning system may allocate cost and discounts in ways this simple bridge does not.
