## Content

**Intro:** Boards approve backup and segmentation spend when they can see a number. This calculator estimates how long a ransomware outage keeps a plant down and what it costs in lost margin, then shows how much faster restores change the answer.

**Sections:**

#### How to use it

**Body:** Enter annual revenue and production hours for the affected site, the share of production that actually stops, and how much lost output you could win back with overtime. Add contribution margin, your detection and containment time, the number of servers to rebuild, restore effort per server and how many restores can run in parallel. Add the cost of an incident response firm. Run it twice, once with today's restore capability and once with the improvement you want to fund.

**Bullets:**

- Use tested restore times, not vendor numbers
- Include the ERP, MES, AD and file servers in the count
- Share the result with finance before the budget meeting

#### The model

**Body:** Restore duration is server count times effort per server divided by parallel streams. Total downtime adds detection time and a fixed 8 hours for validation. Revenue per production hour is revenue divided by production hours. Revenue lost is that rate times downtime times the share of production stopped. After recapture, the unrecovered revenue is multiplied by contribution margin and added to response cost. Margin, not revenue, is the right measure of loss.

#### Worked example

**Body:** At 25 servers, 1.5 hours each and 4 streams, restore takes about 9.4 hours. With 12 hours of detection and containment plus 8 for validation the plant is down about 29 hours. At 12,000 dollars of revenue per hour and 80 percent stoppage that is roughly 278,000 dollars lost, 195,000 after recapture, and about 58,000 of contribution margin plus the 120,000 response cost. Doubling the streams cuts the restore, but detection time is usually the larger lever.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** Counting only IT recovery and ignoring the time to re-validate OT systems, assuming backups are clean when they share credentials with production, and forgetting that detection often takes days. Test restores into an isolated network, keep an offline or immutable copy, segment the OT network, and keep a printed recovery runbook that does not live on the affected servers.

**Cta:** If you need to show leadership where recovery time can be cut, Netray can help you map ERP and plant system dependencies on your own infrastructure.

**Faq:**

#### Does this include the ransom payment?

**Answer:** No. The tool models downtime and response cost only, because paying a ransom is a separate decision with legal and insurance implications. Add any expected payment or legal cost to the result manually.

#### Why use contribution margin instead of revenue?

**Answer:** Lost revenue overstates the loss when variable costs such as materials are not spent. Contribution margin shows the profit you do not earn, which is the amount finance usually accepts for a business case.

#### What is a realistic recovery time for a plant?

**Answer:** It varies widely. Many incidents take days to restore core systems and weeks to return to normal. The model's output is only as good as your detection time and tested restore rate, so measure both.

#### How do I reduce this number?

**Answer:** Shorten detection with monitoring, keep immutable offline backups, restore in parallel from a documented order, segment IT from OT, and rehearse the runbook twice a year with the plant team.
