**Agg:** sum

**Format:** currency

**Summary:**

#### Credit if no prior QREs (6% method)

**Key:** startup_credit

**Expr:** sum_qre * 0.06

**Format:** currency

**Primary:** true

**Description:** Alternative simplified credit when there are no QREs in any of the three prior years.

#### Same credit after 21% corporate rate reduction

**Key:** reduced_credit

**Expr:** startup_credit * 0.79

**Format:** currency

**Description:** Approximation of the reduced credit election for a C corporation.

#### Credit if prior 3-year average QRE equals 60% of current

**Key:** asc_with_base

**Expr:** (sum_qre - 0.5 * 0.6 * sum_qre) * 0.14

**Format:** currency

**Description:** Illustration of the 14% over 50% of base formula using an assumed prior average.

**Notes:** Replace the sample rows with your own projects. Under the alternative simplified credit the standard rate is 14% of QREs above 50% of the average of the prior three years' QREs, or 6% of current QREs when a prior year is missing. Wages must be for qualified services such as direct research, direct supervision or direct support. Document technological uncertainty and the process of experimentation for each project. Not tax advice.

## Content

**Intro:** Manufacturers do qualifying research more often than they think: new part designs, process development, tooling and automation trials, and material testing can all count. This worksheet lets an engineering manager and controller list spend by project, apply a realistic qualifying percentage and see a first estimate of the federal credit.

**Sections:**

#### How to use the worksheet

**Body:** Add one row per project and expense type. Enter the total spend, then the percentage that relates to qualified activity based on time records, engineering logs or interviews. The worksheet computes the estimated qualified research expense for each row and totals it. Replace the sample rows, export to Excel and share it with your tax advisor, who will refine the percentages and prepare the credit calculation and supporting study.

#### What generally qualifies

**Body:** The credit rests on the four-part test in Section 41: the work must aim to develop a new or improved function, performance, reliability or quality, rely on principles of engineering or science, address technical uncertainty, and involve a process of experimentation. For manufacturers, qualified expenses include wages for staff doing the work, supplies consumed in it, and a portion of contract research. Routine quality control, cosmetic changes and production after commercial release usually do not qualify.

**Bullets:**

- Wages for engineers, technicians and supervisors doing qualified work
- Supplies used up during experimentation, not general overhead
- Contract research limited to 65 percent of amounts paid
- Rental of computers used in qualified research

#### Reading the credit estimate

**Body:** The worksheet shows the simplest case, a 6 percent credit on current QREs when there are no prior-year QREs, and a second illustration of the 14 percent over 50 percent of the prior three-year average method. Your real result depends on your actual history, entity type, the corporate rate reduction election and other limits. Use the estimate to decide whether a formal study is worth doing, not as a filing figure.

#### Common mistakes and ERP notes

**Body:** The biggest errors are claiming whole departments instead of the qualified portion, missing contemporaneous records, and including production work after the design is final. Your ERP can help: project accounting, work orders for prototype builds and labor reporting by engineering order give a data trail. In Infor SyteLine, SAP, Epicor and Oracle, tagging engineering projects and prototype work orders makes the supplies and labor easy to extract at year end.

**Cta:** Netray can pull prototype work orders, engineering labor and project costs from your ERP so your tax advisor starts with structured data instead of a blank spreadsheet.

**Faq:**

#### Does a manufacturer qualify for the R&D credit?

**Answer:** Often yes, if it develops new or improved products, processes or tooling and faces technical uncertainty resolved through experimentation. Routine production, quality inspection and cosmetic changes do not qualify. A project-level review is the only reliable way to tell, and documentation matters as much as the work.

#### What is the difference between 6 percent and 14 percent?

**Answer:** Under the alternative simplified credit, 14 percent applies to QREs above half of the prior three-year average. If you have no QREs in one of the three prior years, the method uses 6 percent of current QREs instead. Your advisor will choose the method that gives the best result.

#### Are contract researchers included?

**Answer:** Yes, but only 65 percent of amounts paid for qualified research performed on your behalf, with additional conditions on who bears the risk and who owns the results. Keep the contract, the statement of work and proof of payment with the project file.

#### Do I need a formal study?

**Answer:** For a meaningful claim, yes. Most advisors prepare a study that documents each project against the four-part test and ties spend to ledgers and payroll. The worksheet helps you decide whether the potential credit justifies the cost of that study.
