## Content

**Intro:** A distributor offers 4,000 resistors on a reel at 38 cents, or cut tape at 62 cents. You use 1,500 a year. Which is cheaper once you include the capital tied up and the risk the part goes obsolete? This calculator answers it with one formula you can defend to finance.

**Sections:**

#### How to use it

**Body:** Enter your annual usage, the reel quantity and both unit prices. Set the carrying cost rate your finance team uses and an annual write-off risk for the part family. The calculator shows how many years of cover a reel represents, the total holding cost, and the all-in reel cost per piece actually used. Compare that figure with the cut tape price. The chart sweeps annual usage so you can see where the reel starts to win.

#### The method

**Body:** Holding cost is the reel's purchase value times the combined carrying and obsolescence rate, times the years of cover, divided by two because average inventory is half the starting stock when usage is steady. The all-in reel cost per piece adds that holding cost to the purchase value and divides by the reel quantity. The break-even cover is the number of years where the all-in cost equals the cut tape price.

#### Reading the result

**Body:** If the break-even cover is much longer than your reel's cover, the reel wins easily. If it is shorter, cut tape is cheaper even though its unit price is higher. Parts with high obsolescence risk, such as older logic families, push the answer toward cut tape or a lifetime buy sized to demand. Remember moisture sensitive parts have limited floor life once the bag is opened, so a very long cover may not be practical.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** Many buyers compare unit prices only, which always favors the reel. Others forget that a large reel may also qualify for a better price on the next order, which the calculator does not credit. A final mistake is using the same risk rate for every part. Use a higher rate for single-source or end-of-life parts and a lower one for multi-source commodities.

**Cta:** If your ERP has usage history and lifecycle flags, Netray can help prepare these comparisons from your own data instead of retyping usage by hand.

**Faq:**

#### What carrying cost rate should I use?

**Answer:** Use the rate your finance team publishes. Commonly it combines cost of capital, storage, handling and shrinkage and lands in a range of roughly fifteen to thirty percent per year, but it is company specific.

#### Does the reel always cost less per piece?

**Answer:** Not after holding cost. For low usage parts the holding cost over many years can exceed the premium on cut tape, which is exactly what the break-even cover result shows.

#### How is obsolescence risk estimated?

**Answer:** Use the lifecycle status from the manufacturer or an obsolescence service, plus experience with the product family. A part in active production is usually lower risk than one flagged not recommended for new designs.

#### What if I can share the reel across products?

**Answer:** Use the combined annual usage of all products. A higher shared usage shortens the cover and generally favors the reel.
