#### Bond premium

**Key:** bond_cost

**Expr:** contract_value * bond_pct / 100 * bond_rate / 100 * bond_months / 12

**Format:** currency

**Primary:** true

#### Total cost of security

**Key:** total_cost

**Expr:** finance_cost + bond_cost

#### Cost of security by months held after completion

**Type:** line

**X:** release_months

**From:** 0

**To:** 48

**Steps:** 24

**Disclaimer:** Simplified: retention is assumed to build up evenly and the cost of capital to be a flat annual rate. Some contracts release half at commissioning, or allow a retention bond in place of cash holdback.

## Content

**Intro:** Retention and bonds are security for the buyer and a financing cost for the supplier. This calculator turns both into currency so they can be priced into a quote or negotiated.

**Sections:**

#### How to use it

**Body:** Enter the contract value, the retention percentage, how long the build takes and how many months after completion the retention stays held. Add your cost of capital, the performance bond size and the quoted annual premium. The output splits the cost between financing and premium, and shows it as a share of the contract. Try replacing the cash retention with a bond to see which is cheaper for the supplier.

**Bullets:**

- Use your actual borrowing or opportunity cost of capital.
- Ask your bank or surety for a real premium quote, not a rule of thumb.
- Test the effect of an earlier partial release at commissioning.

#### The formula

**Body:** Retention at completion equals contract value times the retention percentage. It accrues evenly during the build, so the average balance during build is half of that amount. The financing cost equals the retention times the cost of capital divided by twelve, times half the build months plus the months held after completion. The bond premium equals contract value times bond percentage times annual premium rate times bond months divided by twelve. Total cost is the sum of both.

#### Reading the result

**Body:** On a long warranty period, the financing cost of cash retention can exceed the bond premium. That is why many suppliers offer a retention bond or a bank guarantee instead, which costs a premium but frees the cash. Buyers should note that a supplier will price these costs into the contract value, so a heavier security package is not free to the buyer either, and may be worth trading against price or a shorter warranty.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** Common mistakes include stacking a cash retention and a performance bond for the same risk, leaving the release trigger vague, and forgetting that bonds have their own conditions such as on demand or conditional wording. Track retention balances and release dates against each invoice in your ERP so the amount and the date are never in dispute.

**Cta:** If retention balances are tracked outside the ERP, we can help set up a read-only report that ties holdback amounts and release dates to invoices.

**Faq:**

#### What is a typical retention percentage?

**Answer:** Five to ten percent is common in equipment and construction contracts, often with part released at completion and the rest after the defects or warranty period. Local law may limit or regulate it, so check where you operate.

#### Is a retention bond cheaper than cash retention?

**Answer:** It can be, particularly when the hold period is long and the cost of capital is high. Compare the bond premium with the financing cost from this calculator. Credit capacity used by the bond also matters.

#### What is a performance bond?

**Answer:** It is a guarantee from a bank or surety that pays the buyer up to a stated amount if the supplier fails to perform. Terms vary: on demand bonds pay quickly, conditional bonds need proof of default.

#### Who bears the cost?

**Answer:** The supplier pays first, but it is normally priced into the quote. Buyers who demand heavy security should expect a higher price, and can sometimes reduce it by accepting lighter security for lower risk deals.
