## Content

**Intro:** Robot cells are justified on paper by labor, but they are won or lost on utilization, scrap and uptime. This calculator gives payback, ROI and NPV for a cell and shows how sensitive the answer is to operating hours.

**Sections:**

#### How to use it

**Body:** Start with a firm installed cost from an integrator quote, including fixtures, guarding, safety assessment, training and commissioning. Count labor only for positions you will actually remove or redeploy to better work; if the operator still tends the cell, savings are partial. Add scrap savings from a measured baseline and include added margin only when you have orders to sell the extra output. Maintenance, consumables and programming support are real running costs, so do not leave them out.

**Bullets:**

- Use integrator-quoted installed cost
- Count only labor you will really save
- Include spares and programming support
- Check the hours sweep before approving

#### The formulas

**Body:** Net annual benefit equals labor saving plus scrap savings plus added margin, minus maintenance and other running costs. Simple payback is installed cost divided by net annual benefit. ROI over life is net benefit times years, less cost, divided by cost. NPV discounts the level annual benefit using the standard annuity factor, one minus one plus the rate raised to minus life, divided by the rate, then subtracts the investment. These are the standard capital budgeting measures; most finance teams look at payback and NPV together.

#### Worked example

**Body:** A welding cell costing 280,000 dollars replaces two operators at 38 dollars an hour over 4,000 hours, saving 304,000 dollars of labor. Adding scrap savings and margin, then subtracting maintenance of about 16,800 and other costs, gives a strong net benefit and a payback near one year. But if the cell runs only 1,500 hours, labor saving drops sharply and payback stretches past three years. That is why hours matter more than robot speed in most cases.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** Overstating utilization is the main one. Others are ignoring changeover and programming time for high-mix work, assuming no downtime, forgetting upstream and downstream constraints, and double counting labor and throughput. Check that your parts are consistent enough for the cell, and that safety standards such as ISO 10218 and ANSI/RIA R15.06 are covered by the integrator's scope.

**Bullets:**

- Utilization assumed too high
- High-mix changeover not included
- Constraint moves elsewhere
- Safety validation missing from quote

**Cta:** If your justification depends on cycle time, scrap and utilization data from the ERP and shop floor, Netray can help extract it so the case rests on measured numbers.

**Faq:**

#### What payback is acceptable?

**Answer:** It depends on your hurdle rate and risk tolerance. Many plants look for payback under two to three years for automation, but strategic or safety-driven cells may be approved on longer paybacks. Always check NPV too.

#### Should I include depreciation or tax?

**Answer:** This is a pre-tax operating view. Finance will normally add depreciation, tax shields and any capital incentives. Use this to screen the project, then hand the numbers to finance for the formal case.

#### How is this different from a cobot calculation?

**Answer:** A robot cell usually has higher speed and cost, with guarding and fixtures. A cobot often has lower cost but slower cycle and smaller payload. We have a separate cobot payback calculator for that case.

#### Can I model two shifts?

**Answer:** Yes. Increase operating hours and the number of positions replaced to reflect the second shift. Check that you can staff and maintain the cell across both shifts.
