## Content

**Intro:** Buyers and machine shops price bar by weight, but drawings and quotes are in diameter and length. This worksheet converts between the two so you can check a supplier quote or plan a stock purchase quickly.

**Sections:**

#### How to fill the quote sheet

**Body:** Add one row per bar item. Enter the number of bars, the diameter and stock length in millimetres, the density of the alloy and the price per kilogram. The worksheet returns weight per bar, weight per meter and extended cost. Replace the example prices with your own and export to Excel to attach it to a purchase request.

**Bullets:**

- Use the actual stock length, commonly 3 or 6 meters
- Enter the supplier price per kg, not per piece
- Keep cut charges on a separate line
- Add a row for each alloy

#### The math behind bar weight

**Body:** The cross section of a round bar is pi times the diameter squared divided by four. Multiply by length for volume, and by density for mass. A 50 mm steel bar has an area of about 1963 square mm, so one meter holds 1.963 million cubic mm, or 0.001963 cubic meters, which weighs about 15.4 kg at 7850 kg/m3. The weight per meter column makes quick checks easy against the handbook tables that suppliers publish.

#### Reading results and avoiding errors

**Body:** Compare the weight per meter with the supplier table. If they differ by more than a few percent, one of you is using the wrong diameter or density. Remember that cold drawn and ground bar is held to tight diameter tolerances, while hot rolled bar can run over nominal size and weigh more. Price per kg often changes by size and by alloy, so quote each size separately. When you store these values in an ERP, keep the price unit of measure explicit so a per-kg price is never read as a per-bar price.

**Bullets:**

- Verify density for the specific alloy
- Check price basis: per kg, per cwt or per piece
- Add a rounding allowance for sawing

**Cta:** If you want purchase prices, bar sizes and stock weights pulled straight from your ERP into a sheet like this, we can set that up as a read-only agent.

**Faq:**

#### How do I check a supplier bar weight table?

**Answer:** Compute weight per meter with this sheet and compare it to the table for the same diameter and alloy. A match within a percent or two is normal. Larger gaps usually mean a different density or a rounded diameter.

#### Does it work for hex or square bar?

**Answer:** No, it uses the round section formula. For square bar use side squared times length times density, and for hex bar use the across flats area of about 0.866 times flats squared. Those need a different area term.

#### What density is used for brass?

**Answer:** Free machining brass such as C36000 is about 8500 kg/m3. Other brasses range roughly from 8400 to 8700, so check your supplier datasheet when accuracy matters.

#### Why does my invoice weight differ?

**Answer:** Invoices use scale weight, while this sheet gives nominal theoretical weight. Hot rolled bar commonly weighs slightly more than nominal. Also check whether the invoice includes cut ends or packaging.
