**Max:** 12

**Step:** 1

**Unit:** years

**Outputs:**

#### Net annual benefit

**Key:** net_annual

**Expr:** benefit * real_pct / 100 - run_delta

**Format:** currency

**Description:** Realised benefit minus added run cost.

#### Present value factor

**Key:** annuity

**Expr:** (1 - pow(1 + disc / 100, 0 - years)) / (disc / 100)

**Format:** decimal

**Description:** Annuity factor for the period at the discount rate.

#### Net present value

**Key:** npv

**Expr:** net_annual * annuity - invest

**Format:** currency

**Primary:** true

**Description:** Positive means the case clears your hurdle rate.

#### Simple payback

**Key:** payback

**Expr:** if(gt(net_annual,0), invest / net_annual, 0)

**Format:** years

**Primary:** true

**Description:** Zero means the net annual benefit is not positive.

#### Undiscounted ROI

**Key:** roi

**Expr:** if(gt(invest,0), (net_annual * years - invest) / invest * 100, 0)

**Format:** percent

#### Break-even benefit realisation

**Key:** breakeven

**Expr:** if(gt(benefit,0), (invest / annuity + run_delta) / benefit * 100, 0)

**Format:** percent

**Description:** Realisation needed for NPV to be zero.

**Chart:**

#### NPV vs benefit realisation

**Type:** line

**X:** real_pct

**From:** 20

**To:** 120

**Steps:** 21

**Series:**

- npv

**Disclaimer:** Simplified model: equal annual benefits starting after go-live, end-of-year cash flows, no ramp-up, tax or inflation. Use your finance team's full model for approval.

## Content

**Intro:** Boards ask whether the S/4HANA program pays back, and the honest answer depends on how much of the promised benefit shows up. This calculator gives a transparent NPV, payback and break-even view that you can adapt in a meeting.

**Sections:**

#### How to use it

**Body:** Enter the full one-time investment, the annual benefit you planned at full run rate, and the added run cost of the new platform. Then use the realisation slider to stress the benefit. Choose the discount rate your finance team uses and the evaluation period after go-live. The tool returns net present value, simple payback, undiscounted ROI and the break-even realisation that makes NPV zero.

**Bullets:**

- Include internal staff time in investment
- List benefits you can actually measure
- Subtract added run cost, do not ignore it
- Always look at the break-even realisation

#### The math

**Body:** Net annual benefit is the planned benefit times the realisation share, minus the added run cost. The present value factor is (1 - (1+r)^-n) / r, the standard annuity formula, where r is the discount rate and n the number of years. NPV equals net annual benefit times that factor minus the investment. Simple payback is investment divided by net annual benefit. Break-even realisation solves for the benefit share at which NPV equals zero, which is the most useful number to show a sceptical sponsor.

#### Reading the result

**Body:** If the break-even realisation is above what comparable programs achieve, the case depends on optimism. Pair the numbers with a view of non-financial drivers such as end of mainstream maintenance for your current release, regulatory change and the cost of staying put. Common errors include counting benefits that belong to other initiatives, leaving out data cleansing and change management, and treating licence credits as cash savings. Show the chart rather than a single number.

**Cta:** Netray can help automate the baseline data behind a business case, such as inventory, cycle times and support effort, from your current ERP.

**Faq:**

#### Why does the tool ignore ramp-up?

**Answer:** To stay simple. Benefits usually build over one to three years. You can approximate this by lowering the realisation percentage or shortening the evaluation period, or build a year-by-year model in a spreadsheet.

#### What discount rate should I use?

**Answer:** Use the hurdle rate or weighted average cost of capital your finance team applies to IT investments. Many corporate rates fall between 7 and 12 percent, but yours is what matters.

#### Can I include avoided risk as benefit?

**Answer:** Only if you can estimate it credibly, for example avoided extended maintenance fees or retired legacy support. Soft benefits such as agility are better shown alongside the NPV than inside it.

#### Is simple payback enough?

**Answer:** It ignores time value and anything after payback, so use it with NPV and break-even realisation. A short payback with thin margin for error can still be a fragile case.
