**Disclaimer:** Plain annual calculation. SAP depreciation keys can combine methods, switch to straight-line, use periods, mid-year conventions and area-specific rules. Always confirm against a test asset in your chart of depreciation.

## Content

**Intro:** When you configure or audit a depreciation key in SAP Asset Accounting, you need a quick independent figure to compare against the depreciation run. This calculator gives the yearly charge, accumulated depreciation and net book value for straight-line and double declining balance, so you can spot a wrong life, base value or residual setting before it reaches the ledger.

**Sections:**

#### How to use it

**Body:** Enter the capitalised acquisition cost, the residual value you expect, the useful life and the method. Move the fiscal year slider to see the charge and net book value for that year. The chart sweeps years one to twenty, so you can see where the curve flattens or where depreciation stops once the asset is fully written down. Compare the primary results against an asset in the asset explorer after a posted depreciation run (transaction AFAB) in a test client.

**Bullets:**

- Use the same cost your asset master shows after the last posted acquisition
- Set salvage to 0 if the depreciation key does not use a scrap value
- Compare year by year, not only the final book value

#### The formulas behind it

**Body:** Straight-line spreads cost minus salvage evenly: (cost - salvage) / life. Double declining balance applies a rate of 2 / life to the opening book value each year, so the charge in year n is cost * (1 - 2/life)^(n-1) * 2/life, and it is clipped so book value never drops below salvage. Accumulated depreciation is the sum of those charges, and net book value is cost minus accumulated depreciation. In SAP these behaviours come from the base value, depreciation type and multilevel methods behind a depreciation key in the chart of depreciation.

#### Reading the result

**Body:** If your straight-line check matches SAP but declining balance does not, the key probably switches to straight-line when that produces a higher charge, which many tax rules allow. If values differ by a small, constant ratio, check whether the first year uses a pro rata period convention based on the capitalisation date. Large differences usually mean a wrong base value, for example investment support or revaluation changing the depreciable amount in a parallel area.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** People often compare a book area and a tax area that use different lives. Others forget that scrap value only applies in areas where it is activated, or test with an asset capitalised mid-period and expect a full year. Also remember a year-end depreciation run must have been executed for every period before the planned value report matches posted value.

**Cta:** If your team spends time reconciling asset depreciation across several depreciation areas, Netray can build a read-only assistant over your SAP data that explains differences in plain language. Ask us about a short scoping call.

**Faq:**

#### Does this replace the SAP depreciation simulation?

**Answer:** No. It is an independent sanity check for one asset with a single method. SAP's simulation and planned depreciation reports apply your real depreciation key, areas and period control. Use this to confirm the order of magnitude and catch configuration errors.

#### Why does declining balance never reach zero?

**Answer:** A declining balance method applies the rate to a shrinking book value, so it approaches but never reaches zero. SAP depreciation keys therefore usually include a switch to straight-line in a later year, or a residual value, which this calculator models only through the salvage floor.

#### What is the right useful life to enter?

**Answer:** Use the life defined in the depreciation key or the asset master for the specific depreciation area. Book, tax and group areas often have different lives. Check the area before comparing, because the same asset class can behave differently in each.

#### Can I use it for assets in other ERPs?

**Answer:** Yes. The straight-line and double declining formulas are general accounting methods, so they apply to any fixed asset module. Only the depreciation key behaviour described here is specific to SAP.
