## Content

**Intro:** Capacity values on bins and bin types stop putaway from overfilling a location. This calculator finds the number of pallets that fit a bin by dimensions and by weight, and tells you which limit applies.

**Sections:**

#### How to use the calculator

**Body:** Enter the clear opening of the bin and the size of the loaded pallet. Add clearances, the maximum stack levels allowed and the weight data. The calculator returns pallets across, in depth and in height, then compares dimensional capacity with weight capacity. The lower value is the bin capacity. Use the chart to see how a change in loaded pallet height moves capacity, which helps when product mix changes.

#### The method

**Body:** Dimensional capacity is pallets across times pallets deep times levels. Each count is a floor division of the bin dimension by the pallet dimension plus clearance. Weight capacity is the maximum bin load divided by the gross pallet weight, rounded down. The bin capacity is the lower of the two. The same logic is used when setting capacity data on bin types in WM or EWM, where the system then checks it during putaway.

**Bullets:**

- Across = floor(bin width / (pallet width + side clearance))
- Deep = floor(bin depth / pallet depth)
- Levels = floor(bin height / (load height + clearance)), limited by stack rules
- Capacity = min(dimension capacity, weight capacity)

#### Reading results and common mistakes

**Body:** If weight is the limit, the bin has spare room but not spare strength, which suggests lighter products or a different rack. If height is the limit, a small change in loaded height can add a level. Common mistakes include forgetting beam thickness in the clear height, ignoring side clearance for forklifts, and using net instead of gross weight. Also keep in mind that products with mixed pallet sizes need separate bin types.

**Cta:** If your capacity data in SAP is out of date with the real racks and products, we can build a check that compares master data with actual dimensions and flags mismatches.

**Faq:**

#### Where do I enter bin capacity in SAP?

**Answer:** In WM, capacity is controlled through storage type settings, capacity check methods and bin data. In EWM, through storage type, bin type and handling unit type data. Menu paths vary by release, so check your system.

#### Why use the lower of weight and dimension capacity?

**Answer:** Because both limits must hold at the same time. A bin that fits three pallets by space but only two by weight can safely hold two.

#### Should I include clearance?

**Answer:** Yes. Forklift tolerance and rack standards require space around the load. Use the clearance recommended by the rack supplier, commonly in the range of 75 to 150 mm.

#### Does this work for shelves and cartons?

**Answer:** Yes if you treat the carton as the unit. Enter shelf dimensions, carton dimensions and weights. Set max levels to the number of cartons you can stack safely.
