## Content

**Intro:** A costing sheet in SAP product costing and order costing applies overhead percentages to a base such as material or labor. This calculator lets you derive the production overhead rate from planned cost, build a simple cost of sales, and measure how much overhead is under or over absorbed once actual volume differs from plan.

**Sections:**

#### How to use it

**Body:** Start with the planned overhead pool and planned base from your cost center plan to get the predetermined rate. Then enter actual direct material and actual labor. The tool applies the material rate and the production rate, adds administrative overhead on cost of manufacture, and compares absorbed production overhead with the overhead actually posted. The chart changes the actual labor base so you can see how volume swings drive under or over absorption.

**Bullets:**

- Use planned values from the same version as your standard cost estimate
- Keep the base consistent: labor cost in plan and in actuals
- Treat the result as the variance you would expect on the cost center or order

#### The method

**Body:** The predetermined overhead rate is planned overhead divided by the planned allocation base. Absorbed overhead equals the actual base multiplied by that rate. Under absorption is actual overhead minus absorbed overhead: if you absorbed less than you spent, the difference remains as a debit in the ledger and appears as an overhead variance. In SAP the percentage and base are set in the costing sheet (rows with base and overhead keys), and the calculated credit goes to the cost center or order that carries the overhead.

#### Reading the result

**Body:** A modest positive under absorption is normal when volume falls below plan, because fixed overhead is spread over a smaller base. A large number suggests the planned rate is stale or that activity was posted on the wrong base. Negative figures mean you recovered more overhead than you spent, which flatters inventory value until the variance is settled at period end.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** Using actual overhead in the numerator, which defeats the purpose of a predetermined rate. Mixing hours and currency bases. Forgetting administrative overhead is applied to cost of manufacture and not to material alone. Updating the plan rate mid-year without revaluing inventory, leaving a mismatch between old standard costs and the new rate.

**Cta:** If you want faster answers on overhead variances without opening five reports, Netray can set up a read-only question interface over your SAP controlling data. Talk to us about what you need to check.

**Faq:**

#### Is this the same as SAP activity type pricing?

**Answer:** No. Costing sheet overhead applies percentage surcharges to a base, while activity types price internal services per unit such as machine hour. Both feed product costing, but they use different configuration and different rate logic.

#### What is a good overhead rate?

**Answer:** There is no universal number. It depends on how much cost is in the pool compared with the base. Compare the rate across years and cost centers instead, and investigate sharp moves, since they usually reflect plan changes rather than efficiency.

#### How do I fix large under absorption?

**Answer:** Review the planned volume, remove costs that do not belong to the pool, or choose a base that tracks the driver better, such as machine hours instead of labor. Then re-plan and run the cost estimate again so standards reflect the new rate.

#### Does it handle multiple bases?

**Answer:** This version uses one material rate and one labor-based production rate. For several bases, run the calculation once per base and add the results, or build the logic into your costing sheet and test with a cost estimate.
