## Content

**Intro:** Cross-docking removes putaway, storage and retrieval for pallets that already have an outbound demand. This calculator puts a number on the saving so you can decide whether the setup effort in SAP EWM is justified.

**Sections:**

#### How to use it

**Body:** Enter the number of inbound pallets per day and the share that could realistically flow straight to an outbound door. Then enter the touches in each flow and the cost per touch, which covers labor and equipment for one pallet movement. Add the typical dwell time in storage and the storage cost per pallet per day. The tool compares the baseline cost with the cost under the cross-dock share and shows the daily and annual saving. Slide the share to see how the saving grows.

#### The cost model

**Body:** Baseline cost per pallet is touches times cost per touch plus dwell days times storage cost. With cross-docking, the cross-docked share uses the lower number of touches and no storage, and the rest follows the standard flow. Saving is baseline minus the new total. Because both handling and storage drop for the cross-docked share, the saving is linear in the share. The model is deliberately simple so every input can be checked against your own cost accounting.

**Bullets:**

- Baseline = pallets x (std touches x cost + dwell x storage cost)
- Handling = pallets x blended touches x cost
- Saving = baseline - handling - storage

#### Where it fits in SAP EWM

**Body:** EWM supports cross-docking variants including transportation cross-docking and push or pull deployment, where inbound deliveries are matched with outbound deliveries or requirements and the goods move directly from the goods receipt area to the goods issue area. The share you can realistically achieve depends on how early outbound demand is known when the goods arrive, so look at your order lead times before assuming a high percentage.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** The biggest error is assuming a high cross-dock share without checking timing: if the outbound order arrives after the goods, the pallet must be stored anyway. Also include the extra coordination effort and the staging space needed at the doors, since congestion can erase the saving. Use measured cost per touch rather than a generic hourly rate, and revisit the dwell time since slow movers inflate the average and the baseline.

**Cta:** If you want to find which inbound pallets already had open outbound demand last quarter, straight from your SAP delivery data, we can build that analysis on your own servers.

**Faq:**

#### What is a realistic cross-dock share?

**Answer:** It varies widely. Retail and distribution flows with known store orders can reach 30 percent or more, while make-to-stock operations may see a few percent. Measure it from historical matching of inbound and outbound timing.

#### Does cross-docking always save money?

**Answer:** Not always. If staging space is tight or timing is unreliable, delays and double handling can cost more than storage. Test with a small product group first.

#### What counts as a touch?

**Answer:** Any movement of a pallet by a person or machine, such as unloading, moving to a bin, retrieving, staging and loading. Count them from your actual process steps.

#### Can I include damage or lead time benefits?

**Answer:** This tool counts direct handling and storage cost only. Fewer touches also lower damage, and shorter lead time has value, but those benefits are specific to each business and are better added separately.
