## Tool

**Kind:** calculator

**Currency:** $

**Inputs:**

#### Average units on hand

**Key:** avg_units

**Type:** number

**Default:** 48000

**Min:** 0

**Step:** 500

**Unit:** units

#### Units per pallet

**Key:** units_per_pallet

**Type:** number

**Default:** 60

**Min:** 1

**Step:** 1

**Unit:** units

#### Peak inventory factor

**Key:** peak_factor

**Type:** number

**Default:** 1.25

**Min:** 1

**Step:** 0.05

**Help:** Peak inventory divided by average inventory over the year.

#### Target maximum occupancy

**Key:** target_occ

**Type:** slider

**Default:** 85

**Min:** 60

**Max:** 98

**Step:** 1

**Unit:** %

**Help:** Above about 85 to 90 percent, putaway search time and honeycombing losses grow.

#### Cost per position per month

**Key:** cost_pos

**Type:** number

**Default:** 12

**Min:** 0

**Step:** 0.5

**Unit:** $

**Outputs:**

#### Average pallets on hand

**Key:** avg_pallets

**Expr:** avg_units / units_per_pallet

**Format:** integer

#### Peak pallets

**Key:** peak_pallets

**Expr:** avg_pallets * peak_factor

**Format:** integer

#### Pallet positions required

**Key:** positions

**Expr:** ceil(peak_pallets / (target_occ / 100))

**Format:** integer

**Primary:** true

**Description:** Positions needed so the peak lands at the target occupancy.

#### Occupancy on an average day

**Key:** avg_occ

**Expr:** avg_pallets / positions * 100

**Format:** percent

#### Monthly cost of positions

**Key:** monthly_cost

**Expr:** positions * cost_pos

**Format:** currency

**Chart:**

#### Positions required vs target occupancy

**Type:** line

**X:** target_occ

**From:** 60

**To:** 98

**Steps:** 20

**Series:**

- positions

**Disclaimer:** Planning estimate. Mixed pallet heights, honeycombing in deep lanes and slotting rules can require more positions than this simple model.

## Content

**Intro:** When you design storage types in SAP EWM, one of the first questions is how many bins you need. This calculator gives the position count from stock, pallet quantity and a safe occupancy target, so the storage bin master data matches the real warehouse.

**Sections:**

#### How to use it

**Body:** Take the average units on hand from a stock snapshot taken over several months, not a single day. Divide by the quantity that fits on a standard pallet for the main product group. Enter a peak factor, which is the highest monthly inventory divided by the average, and a target maximum occupancy. The primary result is the number of positions required. The chart shows how sensitive the answer is to the occupancy target, which helps you decide how much headroom is worth paying for.

#### The formula

**Body:** Pallets on hand equal units divided by units per pallet. Peak pallets equal that multiplied by the peak factor. Positions required equal peak pallets divided by the target occupancy, rounded up. The average occupancy shows how full the warehouse will feel most of the year, which is usually well below the peak target. The monthly cost multiplies positions by an all-in cost per position, covering rent, racking and handling overhead, and it makes the cost of extra headroom visible.

**Bullets:**

- Peak pallets = units / units per pallet x peak factor
- Positions = ceiling of peak pallets / occupancy
- Average occupancy = average pallets / positions

#### Occupancy and putaway behavior

**Body:** In EWM, putaway strategies search for an empty or partly filled bin, and as occupancy rises the number of candidates falls. Fixed-bin and mixed-pallet situations make this worse. Many operations treat 85 percent as a practical ceiling for selective racking and 90 percent or more as a warning. Deep lane storage and floor stacking behave differently because of honeycombing, where partly emptied lanes cannot take new product, so apply a lower target for those storage types.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** Planners often use units per pallet from the item master without checking the real pallet pattern, which differs when pallets are shipped partly full. Another mistake is using one year-end figure for inventory that has a clear season. Remember also that quarantine, returns, overflow and staging areas need their own positions and should not be absorbed into the main count. Re-run the sizing for each storage type separately.

**Cta:** If you want a live view of bin occupancy, partly filled pallets and storage type utilization from your SAP warehouse, we can build it over your own data without sending it off site.

**Faq:**

#### What peak factor should I use?

**Answer:** Divide the highest month-end inventory in the last two years by the average. Many distribution operations see 1.15 to 1.4 depending on seasonality. If inventory is stable, use 1.1 to leave a small margin.

#### Is 85 percent the right occupancy?

**Answer:** It is a common planning figure for selective racking. Automated or very uniform storage can run higher. Deep lane and block stacking usually need lower targets because of honeycombing.

#### Do I count partial pallets?

**Answer:** Yes. If a share of locations hold partial pallets, lower the units per pallet to the effective average quantity per occupied position, or the result will be too small.

#### Does it apply to WM as well as EWM?

**Answer:** Yes. The same calculation sizes storage bins in classic WM storage types. Only the configuration objects differ.
