## Content

**Intro:** Labor is the largest cost in a warehouse, and SAP EWM will not tell you how many people to hire. This calculator converts daily pick lines and your measured seconds per line into a roster number you can defend in a planning meeting.

**Sections:**

#### How to use the calculator

**Body:** Start with the number of order lines you expect to pick on a normal day, not the number of deliveries. Then enter the average time per line split into two parts: the fixed travel, search and confirmation time, and the handling time per unit. The shift length and utilization convert paid hours into productive hours. Finally add a buffer for peak days and absence. The primary result is the whole number of pickers to roster. Use the chart to see how headcount grows as volume rises, which helps when you present a seasonal plan.

#### The formula behind the result

**Body:** Seconds per line equal fixed time plus units per line multiplied by seconds per unit. Pick work hours equal lines per day multiplied by seconds per line, divided by 3600. Pickers needed equal work hours divided by paid shift hours multiplied by utilization. The buffer multiplies that figure and the result is rounded up with a ceiling. This is the same structure used in engineered labor standards, simplified to two time elements. It ignores replenishment, packing and put-away, which should be sized separately.

**Bullets:**

- Work hours = lines x seconds per line / 3600
- Productive hours per picker = shift hours x utilization
- Roster = ceiling of pickers x (1 + buffer)

#### Where the inputs come from in SAP

**Body:** In EWM, warehouse task confirmations carry timestamps and the resource management functions can record the processor, so you can derive real seconds per task from confirmed tasks per user per hour. In classic WM, transfer order confirmations in tables such as LTAP give start and confirmation data when confirmation is required. Use a representative week, exclude outliers such as blocked bins and system downtime, and compare by pick type, because a full pallet pick is much faster than a piece pick from a shelf.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** The usual error is using the vendor's theoretical lines per hour instead of measured data, which understates labor by 20 to 40 percent. Another is counting deliveries rather than lines, or forgetting that waves release work in bursts so the peak hour needs more people than the daily average suggests. Keep utilization realistic: 75 to 85 percent is common for RF-directed picking, and 90 percent or more is rarely sustainable across a full shift.

**Bullets:**

- Do not mix pallet picks and piece picks in one average
- Size peak hour separately if waves are tight
- Re-run after changing slotting or pick path

**Cta:** If you want pick productivity and task confirmation times pulled straight from your SAP system into a view like this, we can build it on-premise over your data. Talk to us after you have tried the numbers here.

**Faq:**

#### Is this specific to SAP EWM?

**Answer:** The math applies to any warehouse. It is framed for SAP EWM and WM because the inputs, such as lines per day and confirmation times, come from warehouse tasks and transfer orders in those systems.

#### What utilization should I use?

**Answer:** For RF-directed picking, 75 to 85 percent is a realistic planning range. Use the lower end if you have long travel, frequent replenishment waits or batch release bottlenecks, and the higher end for tightly managed, well slotted operations.

#### Does it include replenishment and packing labor?

**Answer:** No. It sizes pick labor only. Add separate calculations for replenishment, put-away, packing, loading and indirect roles, then sum the headcount for a full warehouse labor plan.

#### How do I handle seasonal peaks?

**Answer:** Run the calculator at peak daily lines to see the temporary headcount, and at the average to see the permanent core. The chart shows how steeply headcount rises, so you can choose between temps, overtime and a second shift.
