## Content

**Intro:** Before you design resources, queues and warehouse order creation rules in EWM you need a defensible headcount. This calculator turns order line volume and cycle times into pickers per shift, with a peak day allowance.

**Sections:**

#### How to use the calculator

**Body:** Enter the daily pick lines and the seconds per line for picking, travel and RF confirmation. Set paid hours per shift and a realistic productive utilisation, since breaks, waiting for work and congestion reduce the time available. Choose the number of shifts and a peak factor, for example 1.3 if the busiest day is 30 percent above average. The tool returns the pickers needed per shift and in total.

#### The formula

**Body:** Time per line equals pick time plus travel time plus confirm time. Required picking hours per day equal lines multiplied by time per line divided by 3600. Productive hours per picker equal shift hours multiplied by utilisation. Pickers per shift equal required hours divided by productive hours per picker and the number of shifts. The result is multiplied by the peak factor and rounded up. The chart shows how sensitive headcount is to travel time, which is why warehouse order creation rules and slotting matter.

**Bullets:**

- Travel time is usually the largest and most reducible part
- Zone or batch picking can cut travel time per line
- Utilisation below 70 percent often signals poor work release

#### Worked example and mistakes

**Body:** With 2400 lines, 83 seconds per line, an 8 hour shift at 80 percent, one shift and a 1.3 peak, the required hours are about 55 and each picker gives 6.4 productive hours, so about 8.7 pickers on average and 12 at peak. A common mistake is to use the best observed pick time instead of an average, which understates headcount. Another is to forget that EWM resource limits, queue assignments and equipment (forklifts, pick carts) may cap how many pickers can work in a zone at once.

**Cta:** If you want to base this on your real task data, Netray can help pull confirmation timestamps from your EWM warehouse tasks to calculate actual seconds per line.

**Faq:**

#### What utilisation should I use?

**Answer:** Many warehouses plan between 70 and 85 percent of paid time as productive. Lower values reflect waiting for work, breaks, travel to the canteen and admin. Measure it from time studies or from EWM confirmation data when you can.

#### How do I reduce travel time per line?

**Answer:** Slot fast moving items near the pick face, use zone or batch picking, and let warehouse order creation rules bundle tasks by area. Even modest reductions have a visible effect on headcount, as the chart shows.

#### Does this include packing and loading?

**Answer:** No. It sizes picking only. Packing, consolidation, loading and replenishment need their own estimates, using the same method with their own cycle times.

#### Can I use it for forklift operators?

**Answer:** Yes for a rough size if you enter put-away or pallet move tasks as lines and use travel and handling time per pallet task. Use realistic equipment utilisation and charging or maintenance downtime.
