**Disclaimer:** Rates are quoted as local currency per one unit of foreign currency. Valuation method, rate type, key date and reversal posting in SAP determine real postings. This is an estimate for one item.

## Content

**Intro:** At period end SAP revalues open foreign currency receivables, payables and balances at the key date exchange rate and posts unrealized differences, which are usually reversed on the first day of the next period. This calculator shows the size and direction of that adjustment for one item or a representative balance, so you can check posting proposals and plan P&L impact.

**Sections:**

#### How to use it

**Body:** Enter the open amount in the document currency, the exchange rate it was posted at and the closing rate, both as local currency per one unit of foreign currency. Choose receivable or payable. The primary result is the unrealized gain or loss. The chart shows how the result moves as the closing rate changes, which is useful when treasury asks what a one percent currency swing means for the quarter.

**Bullets:**

- Check the rate type used in the valuation run, such as M or a corporate rate
- Convert quote direction if the exchange rate table shows the inverse
- Run on totals of an account only if the average posting rate is sensible

#### The formula

**Body:** Revaluation difference = foreign amount * (closing rate - posting rate). For receivables and assets, an increase in the foreign currency value is a gain. For payables and liabilities, the same increase is a loss because you owe more in local terms. SAP runs the foreign currency valuation (transaction F.05 in classic accounting and the valuation run in the new general ledger) per valuation area and method, posts to configured gain and loss accounts and, optionally, to adjustment accounts on the balance sheet.

#### Reading the result

**Body:** The sign matters more than the size: confirm your receivable gain posts to the unrealized gain account and the payable loss posts to the corresponding loss account. If the run proposes the opposite sign, check the quotation of the rate table, the item type and whether the account is flagged as an open item account managed in foreign currency.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** Entering an inverse rate for one of the two inputs. Forgetting that realized gains and losses arise at settlement, not at valuation. Valuing items already revalued in a prior period without using the new baseline. Using the wrong key date or running valuation before all period-end postings are complete.

**Cta:** If your close includes manual rate checks across many currencies, Netray can help build a read-only assistant on top of your SAP finance data. Get in touch to scope it.

**Faq:**

#### Is the result realized or unrealized?

**Answer:** Unrealized. It arises because open items are marked to the closing rate. A realized difference appears when the item is cleared by payment at the actual rate, and SAP posts that separately at clearing.

#### Why are payables the opposite sign?

**Answer:** A payable in foreign currency costs more local currency when that currency strengthens, so the same rate move gives a loss. For a receivable the same move gives a gain.

#### What does the reversal do?

**Answer:** Many companies post the valuation with an automatic reversal on the first day of the next period, so that the original document values stay intact. The P&L effect then comes only from the net movement in the period of the valuation.

#### Can I use average rates?

**Answer:** SAP valuation uses the rate type and key date you configure, usually the closing or month-end rate. Average rates are used for P&L translation in consolidation, so do not mix them with balance sheet valuation.
