## Tool

**Kind:** calculator

**Inputs:**

#### Initial retry delay

**Type:** number

**Default:** 30

**Min:** 1

**Step:** 5

**Unit:** sec

#### Backoff multiplier

**Key:** multiplier

**Type:** select

**Default:** 2

**Options:**

##### 1 (fixed interval)

**Value:** 1

##### 1.5

**Value:** 1.5

##### 2 (doubling)

**Value:** 2

##### 3

**Value:** 3

#### Maximum retries

**Key:** max_retries

**Type:** slider

**Default:** 6

**Min:** 1

**Max:** 12

**Step:** 1

**Unit:** retries

#### Time per attempt (including timeout)

**Key:** attempt_sec

**Type:** number

**Default:** 60

**Min:** 1

**Step:** 5

**Unit:** sec

**Help:** A failed attempt often waits for a timeout, so count the full timeout, not the happy-path time.

#### Random jitter added to each delay

**Key:** jitter_pct

**Type:** number

**Default:** 20

**Min:** 0

**Max:** 100

**Step:** 5

**Unit:** %

#### Longest outage you want to ride through

**Key:** downstream_rto

**Type:** number

**Default:** 60

**Min:** 1

**Step:** 5

**Unit:** min

**Outputs:**

#### Last delay before final attempt

**Key:** last_delay_s

**Expr:** initial_delay * pow(multiplier, max_retries - 1)

**Format:** decimal

**Description:** Seconds.

#### Total waiting between attempts

**Key:** total_wait_s

**Expr:** if(eq(multiplier, 1), initial_delay * max_retries, initial_delay * (pow(multiplier, max_retries) - 1) / (multiplier - 1))

**Format:** decimal

**Description:** Sum of the geometric series of delays, in seconds.

#### Total time spent in attempts

**Key:** attempts_s

**Expr:** (max_retries + 1) * attempt_sec

**Format:** decimal

#### Total retry window

**Key:** window_min

**Expr:** (total_wait_s + attempts_s) / 60

**Format:** minutes

**Primary:** true

#### Window with maximum jitter

**Key:** window_max_min

**Expr:** (total_wait_s * (1 + jitter_pct / 100) + attempts_s) / 60

**Format:** minutes

#### Window as share of outage you want to cover

**Key:** covers_outage

**Expr:** window_min / downstream_rto * 100

**Format:** percent

**Primary:** true

**Description:** 100 or more means the retries outlast the target outage.

**Chart:**

#### Total retry window (min) vs maximum retries

**Type:** line

**X:** max_retries

**From:** 1

**To:** 12

**Steps:** 12

**Series:**

- window_min

**Disclaimer:** Arithmetic on the settings you enter. Check how your platform applies delays, caps and jitter, and make receivers idempotent before enabling retries.

## Content

**Intro:** A retry policy that gives up after two minutes will drop messages during a ten minute downstream restart. This calculator shows how long a given backoff setting really keeps trying, so you can match it to the outages you expect.

**Sections:**

#### How to use it

**Body:** Enter the first retry delay, the multiplier, the number of retries and the time each attempt takes, including the timeout on a failed call. Add the jitter your platform applies and the longest outage you want the interface to survive. The tool gives the total retry window, the window with maximum jitter and how much of your target outage it covers.

#### The formula

**Body:** With initial delay d, multiplier m and n retries, delays are d, dm, dm squared and so on. Their sum is d times (m to the n minus 1) divided by (m minus 1), or d times n when m is 1. Attempt time adds n plus 1 attempts of the stated duration. Jitter spreads retries so many failed messages do not return at the same instant and overload a recovering system. The chart shows how doubling makes the window grow quickly with each extra retry.

#### Reading the result

**Body:** If coverage is below 100 percent, a downstream outage of your target length will exhaust retries and push messages to an error state, for example an error status in the message monitor or a stopped qRFC queue in SMQ1. Either lengthen the window or add a durable queue so the sender does not depend on retries alone. For long outages a dead letter or manual restart process is usually better than an endless retry.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** Retrying a non-idempotent call can post duplicate documents, so use a business key or message ID the receiver can check. Another mistake is retrying on errors that will never succeed, such as a mapping failure or an authorization error, which only burns capacity. Retry transient failures such as timeouts, 503 responses and lock errors, and route permanent failures straight to an error queue.

**Cta:** If duplicate postings or lost messages show up after outages, Netray can help your team review retry, queueing and idempotency design across your SAP interfaces.

**Faq:**

#### What is exponential backoff?

**Answer:** It increases the wait between retries by a fixed multiplier, often two, so a struggling system gets progressively more time to recover and retries do not add constant load.

#### Why add jitter?

**Answer:** Without jitter, many failed messages retry at the same moments and create synchronized spikes. Random variation spreads them out and reduces the chance of overloading the recovering system.

#### How many retries are enough?

**Answer:** Enough to cover the outages you expect, such as a restart or short maintenance. Use the window figure to compare, and move beyond that to queue-based or manual recovery.

#### Do all SAP tools support backoff?

**Answer:** Not identically. qRFC, CPI JMS and client libraries each have their own retry settings and limits. Use this calculator for the arithmetic, then check what your component actually supports.
