**Intro:** Bad material masters are the root of many MRP and costing problems. This request form collects the data a master data team needs before running MM01, so views are filled in once by the right owners rather than patched later.

#### How to use the form

**Body:** Fill in the basic data first: material type, short description, base unit of measure and material group. Then add planning data such as procurement type, MRP type and lot sizing, and the price control indicator. The views table assigns each SAP view to an owning department so engineering does not fill in costing and finance does not guess at safety stock. Export to PDF, route for sign-off, and give the master data steward one clean document.

#### What each view controls

**Body:** Basic data holds description, base unit and weights. Purchasing holds the purchasing group, order unit and goods receipt processing time. MRP views hold the MRP type, MRP controller, lot size, safety stock and planned delivery time. Work scheduling holds production scheduler and in-house production time. Accounting holds valuation class and price control. The material type decides which views are offered, and the plant extension decides which data is plant specific.

#### Choosing key values

**Body:** Price control S uses a standard price and records variances, which suits manufactured items. Price control V uses moving average and suits traded goods with stable purchase prices. Procurement type E means the item is made, F means it is bought, and X means both. MRP type PD runs deterministic MRP, while VB is reorder point planning with manual reorder point. Pick lot-for-lot unless there is a real reason for fixed or period lots. Always confirm base unit before the first transaction, because it is very hard to change after stock exists.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** Duplicate materials created because nobody searched first are the largest cost. Descriptions without a standard naming pattern make search useless. Wrong base unit of measure and wrong price control cause costing errors that persist for years. Leaving the MRP controller blank means exceptions have no owner. Create materials with batch management only if you will actually control batches, since turning it on later with stock present is restricted.

#### Which SAP transaction creates a material master?

**Answer:** MM01 creates a material with the selected views, MM02 changes it and MM03 displays it. In S/4HANA the Manage Product Master Data Fiori app is available. Mass creation usually uses LSMW, migration cockpit or a BAPI.

#### What is the difference between standard and moving average price?

**Answer:** Standard price (S) stays fixed until revalued, and differences between actual and standard post to variance accounts. Moving average price (V) changes with every goods receipt and invoice. Standard price is typical for manufactured items.

#### Who should own which views?

**Answer:** Commonly engineering owns basic data, procurement owns purchasing data, planning owns MRP views, production owns work scheduling, quality owns inspection data and finance owns accounting. Your governance policy sets the actual split.

#### Can I change the material type later?

**Answer:** Only in limited cases. Changing it with existing stock or documents is restricted and can need a special transaction and finance involvement. Choose carefully at creation.
