## Content

**Intro:** Materials with price control V are valuated at a moving average price that SAP recalculates on every valuated goods receipt and some invoice postings. This calculator reproduces that arithmetic so you can predict the price before posting, or explain a price movement to a controller.

**Sections:**

#### How to use the calculator

**Body:** Enter the stock quantity and stock value that you see in the material valuation data, then the receipt quantity and the net price per unit. If the purchase order carries planned delivery costs such as freight or customs, add the amount in the delivery cost field, because those are valuated into stock in the same posting. The tool returns the new quantity, value, moving average price and the percentage move. The chart shows how sensitive the new price is to the receipt price.

**Bullets:**

- Convert PO price units to the base unit first
- Use local currency values
- Check MBEW for current quantity and value

#### The formula

**Body:** The moving average price equals total stock value divided by total stock quantity. On a goods receipt against a purchase order, SAP adds the receipt value to stock value and the receipt quantity to stock quantity, then divides. Because both numerator and denominator grow, a small receipt barely moves the price while a large receipt at a different price drives the average toward the new price. For example, 500 units valued at 6,250 (12.50 each) plus 300 units at 13.80 gives 10,390 over 800 units, or 12.99.

#### Why price control V can surprise you

**Body:** Moving average price makes the cost of goods sold move with every receipt, which is useful for traded goods but noisy for production materials. Consuming stock at the moving average also means a late invoice at a different price changes the value without changing the quantity, and if stock has already been consumed, the difference goes to the price difference account instead. For stable product costing most manufacturers use standard price S with purchase price variance posted separately.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** Typical mistakes include applying the formula when stock is negative, forgetting that a price unit of 100 or 1000 divides the price, and mixing foreign currency with local currency values. Valuation levels also matter: if valuation is at plant level, each plant has its own price, while company code level valuation shares one.

**Bullets:**

- Check the price unit before entering price
- Remember MAP is per valuation area
- Large single receipts move the price the most

**Cta:** Netray can scan your SAP valuation data for materials with unusual price swings and explain each movement from the underlying documents, read-only.

**Faq:**

#### Where is the moving average price stored?

**Answer:** In the accounting view of the material master and in table MBEW, field VERPR for the moving average price. Stock value is in SALK3 and total valuated stock quantity is in LBKUM.

#### What happens when I post a goods receipt with price control V?

**Answer:** SAP posts the receipt at PO price, adds it to stock value and quantity, and recalculates the moving average price. The accounting document debits inventory and credits GR/IR.

#### What is the difference between price control S and V?

**Answer:** Under S, stock is valued at a fixed standard price and variances go to price difference accounts. Under V, stock is valued at the moving average and the price adjusts with each valuated receipt.

#### Can the moving average price go wrong?

**Answer:** Yes, mainly through negative stock, bad migration balances or invoices at unusual prices after consumption. Compare value divided by quantity with VERPR regularly and investigate large gaps.
