**Disclaimer:** Simplified two-way split per cost component. SAP production order variance categories (input price, input quantity, resource usage, scrap, lot size, remaining) use their own rules, so figures here are a cross-check, not a replacement for KKS2.

## Content

**Intro:** A production order variance is only useful when you can say why it happened. This calculator splits the difference between standard and actual into price and quantity effects for material and for labor, so you can see which one deserves attention before running variance calculation in SAP.

**Sections:**

#### How to use it

**Body:** Enter the units produced, the standard quantity and price from the cost estimate (CK11N), and the actuals from the production order. Material price variance is actual price minus standard price, times actual quantity. Usage variance is actual quantity minus allowed quantity, times standard price. Labor works the same way with rate and hours. Positive figures are unfavorable. The chart sweeps the actual material price so you can see how sensitive the order is.

#### How it maps to SAP

**Body:** In SAP, KKS1 and KKS2 calculate variances on an order and classify them into categories. Input price variance corresponds to the price effect here, input quantity variance to usage and efficiency. Scrap, lot size and remaining variance are SAP categories that arise from planned scrap in the estimate, quantity structure differences and everything not otherwise assigned. A material ledger with actual costing changes how price differences are posted, because they flow into the inventory and consumption at period close.

#### Worked example

**Body:** With the defaults, 1,000 units should use 2,500 kg at 12.40, but 2,650 kg were used at 12.85. Price variance is 0.45 times 2,650, or about 1,193. Usage variance is 150 kg times 12.40, or 1,860. Labor is 40 hours over standard at 38 and 1.50 above standard rate across 790 hours. The total is about 9.7 percent of the standard cost, which is large enough to investigate.

#### Common mistakes

**Body:** Valuing the usage variance at the actual price, which double counts price. Mixing planned scrap into the standard quantity in one place and not the other. Comparing a period total to a single order standard. Ignoring that a favorable price variance from a cheap supplier may bring quality issues that show up as scrap.

**Cta:** If you want variance drivers pulled from your own production orders without exporting to Excel, Netray can build a read-only analysis over your SAP data.

**Faq:**

#### What does a positive variance mean here?

**Answer:** A positive figure means actual cost was higher than standard, which is unfavorable. A negative figure means you spent less than the standard allowed. Some reports flip the sign convention, so check which one your SAP report uses.

#### Why does my SAP variance differ from this result?

**Answer:** SAP splits variances into more categories, applies lot size and scrap rules from the cost estimate, and may use moving average or actual costing prices. This tool uses a classic two-way split, so small differences are normal.

#### Which price do I enter for the actual material price?

**Answer:** Use the price at which the material was actually valued at goods issue, or the invoice price if you track purchase price variance separately. In SAP with standard price control, price differences are posted at invoice receipt.

#### Can I use this for a service or process industry order?

**Answer:** Yes, as long as you can state a standard quantity and price per unit of output. For co-products or joint costs you will need to apportion the standard first.
